Obituary of Elizabeth McQuade Bauer

July 12, 1938 – Glasgow, Scotland

June 21, 2022 – Calgary, Alberta

Betty Bauer (nee Girvan), of Calgary, AB, passed away on Tuesday, June 21, 2022 at the age of 83 years.

Betty was born in Glasgow, Scotland on July 12, 1938.  Betty was the second of ten children and had a very busy, happy childhood.  She was very involved in helping with her younger siblings which will be a recurring theme throughout her life.  Betty completed her schooling and had an aptitude for sewing which landed her a factory sewing job.  Her adventurous spirit led her to take a ship and a train to Calgary when she was eighteen years of age.

Betty met the love of her life, Al Bauer, while she was working at the Alberta Wheat Pool with his brother Will.  Betty and Al had three children and seven grandchildren who quickly became the center of their world. Her nurturing nature made her a “mother and grandmother extraordinaire”. Betty spent most of her professional life in the payroll department of TC Energy. During this time, she was a very active member of the Oil women’s club, Desk & Derrick. This allowed her to travel to many exciting places for conferences. Betty enjoyed sewing and crocheting in her spare time.  She enjoyed family camping vacations and she managed to take her children and grandchildren to Hawaii and Mexico. She also enjoyed travelling with her husband on many trips home to Scotland and sunny destinations with friends and family. Betty’s strong Catholic faith was very important to her, and she was a member of the CWL for 60+ years. Betty was the happiest when she was helping or looking after someone who needed assistance.

Betty struggled with Alzheimer’s for the past eight years and had recently moved into Revera Evergreen Memory Care. Even in her new community, Betty took on a nurturing role to help her new friends with daily life struggles or participating in the activities.

Betty is survived by her daughter Linda (Tony) of Calgary, AB, her sons Robert (Tracy) of Sherwood Park, AB, Stephen (Yvonne) of Calgary, AB; grandchildren Kaitlin (James) of Toronto, ON,  Sean (Reagan) of Calgary, AB, Jordan (Jenelle) of Calgary, AB, Zoe (Mike) of Sherwood Park, AB, Ryley (Chris) of Vernon, BC, Stephanie, and Margaret of Calgary, AB; great-grandchildren Kiegan, Asher, Myles, Arlo and Rooney.  She is also survived by her sisters Anna of Calgary, AB as well as Mary (Davie), Cathie (Jim), Joan (Jim), Margaret (Jim) all from Glasgow, Scotland, her brothers Alex (Jackie), Johnny, Tom (Jean), as well as many brothers and sisters in-law residing in Calgary, Edmonton, and Saskatchewan. Betty was predeceased by her husband Alvin, her parents, Alex and Catherine Girvan, and her infant brother Bobby Girvan.
