Obituary of Roy Charles Maxwell

MAXWELL, Roy Charles

October 23, 1935 - Sydney, Nova Scotia

July 3, 2022 - Calgary, Alberta

Roy Maxwell beloved husband of Joan Maxwell (nee Armstrong) of Calgary, AB, passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 3, 2022 at the age of 86 years.

Roy was born in Sydney, Nova Scotia and commenced his post-secondary studies while playing hockey at St. Francis Xavier Junior College. Roy then went on to play hockey at Mount Alison University and graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce degree, and most importantly met Joan.  Roy attended Dalhousie University, where he finished his hockey career with the Dalhousie Tigers and graduated with a law degree in 1961.

Roy and Joan were married in May 1961 and recently celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary. In 1961, along with many of their maritime friends, Roy and Joan relocated to Calgary where Roy commenced his legal practice spanning more than 40 years.  Roy enjoyed his legal practice immensely and was a consummate professional.  He formed lasting relationships with many of his long-served clients through to his retirement in 2007.

Roy served as president of the Calgary Booster Club in 1972-73 and is an honourary life director. Family was very important to Roy and he was supportive of his children and their friends activities, serving as coach and mentor to many.

Roy was an avid runner having completed numerous marathons (personal best of 3:07 when he was 55 years old) with several top three finishes in his age category.  One of the most memorable events for Roy was being a member of the Semi-Centurions who blazed the Banff-Jasper highway for several years with impressive results. Roy put in thousands of kilometers along Calgary’s beautiful river pathways with the Downtown/Eau Claire YMCA serving as his noon-hour office for decades. Many lifetime friends were made with the other YMCA members and the staff.

Roy and Joan developed lasting and special memories through time spent with family and friends at their family cabin in Windermere, B.C.

Roy was a gifted storyteller and public speaker. He was always quick with his stories and jokes, many of which ultimately became known amongst his friends simply by their designated number!

The entire family would like to extend special thanks to the amazing staff and friends at The Journey Club (Westman Village) and The Bowview Manor (Montgomery) for their kind and professional care, especially over the past two months.

Roy is survived by his wife Joan, daughter Barbara Munroe (Neil), son David (Elizabeth Aspinall), and grandchildren Carter Munroe, Paula Munroe, and Sam Maxwell, all of Calgary. Roy is also survived by his bother-in-law Gerard Sampson of Sydney, special niece Linda Sampson of Edmonton, his brother-in-law Robert (Jean) Armstrong of Fredericton, and sister-in-law Emily Hanscomb of Miramichi, New Brunswick. Roy was predeceased by his sister, Joyce Sampson.
