Obituary of Dong Quang Lu 盧廣同

Legacy of Resilience

May 16, 1934 - Saigon, Vietnam

July 3, 2022 - Calgary, Alberta

In loving memory of Dong Quang Lu, who passed away peacefully on July 3, 2022, at the age of 88. Deeply mourned by loving wife Van Thi Lu.

Dong Lu was a dynamic, intelligent individual and a great businessman with a deep commitment to his family and the Chinese community. Forty-three years ago, he made the most difficult decision of his life to gamble against fate and bought passage for his entire family and two nephews on a fishing boat to escape from communist Vietnam. As a result of this brave act, our family was given a second chance at life to enjoy the freedom of living in a democratic country and all the opportunities that Canada offers. The family has been blessed and has grown from eleven to over thirty-three members.

Friends fondly recall his devotion and kindness in helping others in need in the community. Since his retirement at the age of 62, together with his wife, they stayed actively involved with the Chinese Community. Dong Lu served as an executive board member in several Chinese and Indo-China Cultural associations, helped several charities, and raised thousands of dollars for those in need.

Born on May 16, 1934, in Ho Chi Minh, formerly known as Saigon, Vietnam. He survived his two sisters, who had predeceased him. He lived a rich and meaningful life and passed away peacefully with his wife by his side. He left a legacy of resilience and hard work and generosity. He will be missed by those whose lives he has touched.

Besides his loving wife, Dong is survived by his daughters and sons, Jennifer, Sam, Kim Phuong, Minh, Kim Chi, Kim Ai, Bobbie, Vinna and Sorriso; sons-in-law William Poon, Jason Kopf; daughters-in-law Ann Lu, Khammay Lu; grandchildren Joshua, Victoria (Alexander Atkinson) Kassandra (Farzeen Dastouri), Jamie, Katrina, Jasmina, Alison Breanna, Brendon, Kristina, Alarick, Milan and Richelle; and great-grandchildren Scott and Archer Atkinson.

In honor of his life, the family would like to invite friends and community members wishing to pay their respects to a viewing at McInnis & Holloway (Chapel of the Bells, 2720 Centre Street North, Calgary, AB) on Tuesday, July 12, 2022, from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
