Obituary of Elizabeth (Erzsébet) Anna Nagy

December 27, 1928 - Zalaapati, Hungary

July 14, 2022 - Calgary, Alberta, Canada

It is with heavy hearts that the family of Elizabeth (Erzsébet) Nagy announce her passing on Thursday, July 14, 2022, at the age of 93 years.  She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.

Elizabeth was born in Hungary to István and Katalin Horváth. She met her future husband Lajos (Louis) Nagy at her brother’s wedding in 1949, and they married in 1950 in Zalaapati.  Two daughters (Elizabeth and Gizella) were born in Hungary.  The 1956 Hungarian revolution had them flee in the pursuit of freedom, security, and a better life for their family.  Elizabeth and Lajos arrived at Pier 21, Halifax in 1957, and soon after they settled in Calgary, their third daughter Eva was born.

Even though change never came easily to Elizabeth, she forged ahead and worked hard alongside Lajos to provide a safe and secure home for their family.  She adapted well to her new country.  She became adept at speaking, reading, and writing English.  Her many years of work outside her home at Eaton’s store gave her confidence and independence.

Elizabeth was a strong and resilient person.  She accomplished much throughout her life and was especially proud of her family and her home.  She loved to bake and enjoyed cooking.  Sunday dinner for her children and grandchildren was a happy and frequent event.  Her fried chicken and desserts (mézes) were legendary.

Sewing clothing for her family was initially a necessity, and later a much-loved hobby.  She also had a strong bond with the St. Elizabeth of Hungary Church.  This was where she attended both mass and the social functions where she made many friends in her Hungarian community.  In her later years, their senior's club would be an anticipated event that provided social connections after the passing of her beloved Lajos in 2008.

Elizabeth was a proud grandmother and great grandmother.  She loved them so much and always looked forward to their visits and calls.

Elizabeth resided at Walden Heights Senior Community for seven years. She enjoyed the caring staff and the opportunities for activities to keep her involved.  She did not love the pudding desserts and her family worked hard to keep her in cookies.  We are grateful to the dedicated staff, as they kept her safe and happy.

Elizabeth is survived by her son-in-law Ben, and Elizabeth and Ben’s children, daughter Lisa, Ryan (Lisa Ann), and Ryan’s daughter Desiree (Stuart). She is also survived by her daughter Gizella (Béla) Kiss and their children Robert and Rebecca (Adam and their son John) and daughter Eva (Ken) Cudmore and their children Andrea (Martin and their children Oscar and Annie), Matthew (Jenna and their children Brynn and Chase) and Elliot; as well as family in Hungary, Austria, United States, Switzerland, and Canada.

Elizabeth was predeceased by her husband of 57 years, and daughter Elizabeth (2022); and her five siblings, István, Károly, Mária, Ferenc, and Anna.
