Obituary of Donna Gross

April 10, 1941 - July 28, 2022

Donna, beloved wife of Peter Gross of Calgary, AB passed away on Thursday, July 28, 2022, at the age of 81 years.

Donna was born and raised in Butte, Montana, where she also met her husband Peter, while he was attending the School of Mines. While growing up in Butte, Donna assisted her mother Mary in raising her younger sisters, developing many skills later used in raising her own family of four children.

Donna showed her aptitude for sewing early on, and that later grew into her love for quilting. Many times, the living room was shared with an in-progress quilt on the frame. She shared these talents widely; crafting coordinating outfits for family at Christmas, volunteering to sew bags for a babysitting elective, and creating numerous quilts that have been donated within the organizations she dealt with. Donna was very proud of her job outside the home at Fannys Fabrics; there she met, shared stories, and patterns with other quilting enthusiasts, in addition to earning “pin money” for her escapes to bingo.

Donna was very devoted to her faith; almost daily she prayed for family and friends that they could find the best path forward and the courage to stay on that path. St. Jude was often called upon to generate the strength to overcome the hurdles that life throws everyone.

“Nana Banana” had a huge spot in her heart for all her grandkids and was very proud of all their developments and accomplishments. Many fond memories exist of time spent watching recitals, band concerts, sporting events, and practices, either live or through videos. Regardless of the skill level, all were precious to Donna.

Donna is survived by her children, Brent (Lynda), Lori, and Dawn (Mike) Schurman; six granddaughters, Thea, Stephanie, Nicole, Hannah, Chloe, and Hayden; and two sisters, Suzanne, and Patty. She was predeceased by her husband Peter, son Todd, and brother Bill.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Peter’s Catholic Church (541 Silvergrove Drive N.W., Calgary, AB) on Saturday, August 6, 2022, at 1:00 p.m. Condolences, memories, and photos may be shared and viewed here.
