Obituary of Mike Skakun

September 13, 1971 – Dauphin, Manitoba

August 9, 2022 - Calgary, Alberta

It is with great sadness that the family of Michael Allan Skakun, of Calgary, AB, announce his passing on Tuesday, August 9, 2022, at 7:55 pm at Foothills Hospital from heart failure.

Mike was born in Dauphin, MB, on September 13, 1971, while the family was living in Thicket Portage, MB. In 1974, the family moved to Saskatoon. Mike left home early, and it took him a little while to find his way but found something he loved as a long-haul truck driver, obtaining his Class 1 license. At that point, Mike moved his home base to Calgary, AB. He traveled all over North America and especially enjoyed shopping for others and bringing back outlet priced goodies for whomever asked. Mike did long haul trucking for many years until his health changed.

If you had to know three things about Mike it is that he had a great passion for photography, his sense of humour was legendary, and he loved his daughter Makayla. Mike also loved a good Ukrainian perogy supper, the Simpsons (anyone who met him noticed his resemblance to Homer, a comparison he greatly enjoyed), discussing politics, going for a smoke, cool fighter planes, shopping, and telling a lengthy and humorous story. His lifelong dream of owning a Corvette was realized when he found his gorgeous red car.

The person Mike loved most in this life was his beautiful daughter Makayla. From the moment Makayla was born, Mike’s whole world revolved around his love for her. He loved taking photos of her, spending time with her, and telling everyone how amazing she is. Mike’s last breath followed Makalya telling him that she loved him.

Mike was predeceased by his father Nick Skakun, grandparents Mike and Anna Skakun, and Hubert and Jane Winters. He is survived by his daughter Makayla Jeffery-Skakun, Makayla’s mother Anne Jeffery, his mother Elva Winters, sister and brother-in-law Susan and Conrad Hadubiak, their children Stephanie, Brian, and their son Ozman Lunde, Mark and Erika, and Christopher, sister and brother-in-law Cindy and Cliff Gelowitz, their children Anton and Aaron, his Aunt Marilyn Strang, his Sokoloski and Strang cousins, and his many friends.

If Mike could ask three things for people to do in his memory, we believe it would be:

1)    Keep Makayla in your hearts and share your memories of him with her.

2)    Buy a friend a Slurpee

3)    Go bald… just kidding.

We love you Mike and will miss you dearly.
