Obituary of Patricia Hogan

January 21, 1942 – Calgary, Alberta

August 19, 2022 – Calgary, Alberta

Pat passed away peacefully with her children at her side on Friday August 19, 2022.  She will be remembered in so many special ways, along with the indelible mark she has left on our hearts.

Pat came into the world curious. She was blessed to have her passion for teaching and learning fed by nearly 40 years in a most rewarding career with the Calgary Board of Education, The University of Calgary, and Bow Valley College. She thrived on connecting with students, their families, colleagues, and the community. Even after retirement, lifelong learning through the Calgary Association of Lifelong Learners (CALL) filled her heart and mind. She has been blessed with many wonderful friends who have walked with her, talked with her, laughed with her, and cried with her.

She was also blessed with two wonderful children for whom she felt enormous love and pride. Her son Jeff brought daughter-in-law Michelle into her life. Her daughter Brigid and son in law Brendan brought her beloved granddaughters, Meghan, Jillian, and Natalie into the world. Being a grandmother, a “Deh-Deh”, has been Pat’s most rewarding experience ever. The girls have provided her with nothing but endless joy.  She will be deeply missed and forever loved.

Pat held us all in a beautiful state of grace and acceptance, knowing her life was nearing its end. The time and space to say farewell to her family and friends with intention was a gift.  She was grateful for the amazing care she received in the Pulmonary Ward at the PLC.  She was teaching her doctors and nurses right up until the day she died.

“We must accept our reality as vastly as we possibly can; everything, even the unprecedented, must be possible within it. This is, in the end, the only kind of courage required of us: the courage to face what is strangest and most awesome.” ~Rilke

A celebration of life will be announced at a later date. Family and friends are working to establish a scholarship in her name.  More details will be shared at her celebration of life. Condolences, memories, and photos may be shared with Patricia’s family here.
