August 19, 2022– Calgary, Alberta

It is with a heavy heart that the family of Kulaas Arul, beloved husband of Kamala Arul (nee Vaithilingam), of Calgary, AB, announces his passing on Friday, August 19, 2022, at the age of 76 years.

Kulaas was born in Jaffna, Sri Lanka, on November 2, 1945, to Arulampalam and Thangama Kulasegaram Pillai. Kulaas graduated from the University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka, with a degree in Civil Engineering. He married Kamala in Kano, Nigeria, on November 5, 1980. They moved to Birmingham, England, in 1984 to pursue further studies in Civil Engineering and then to Calgary, AB, in 1986, where he established his family.

Kulaas enjoyed travelling with his wife Kamala and their family. He has taken many unforgettable trips throughout Europe, North America, Africa, and Asia, for both work and pleasure. His pass-times included reading the newspaper, politics, and water resource Engineering. He also loved discussing the building of bridges, dams, and canals. He was a doting father and grandpa and loved to drive, whether taking his daughter and grandkids to activities, school, events, or on holiday road trips, time with his family was always special.

Kulaas will be most remembered for his great sense of humour, as there was never a day without laughter in his company. He had a lovely singing voice and sang at religious events to his family and grandkids. He has even been known to sing to the delight of the paramedics and nurses in his last days.

Kulaas is lovingly remembered by his wife of forty-four years Kamala Arul, daughter Angie Brar (Nav Brar), and grandsons, Terrance, and Lucas Brar. He is also remembered by his brother Raj Pillai (Pathmini Pillai), and sisters, Rudra Paramaguru, and Rathi Krishnaraja. He also leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
