Obituary of Barbara Joanne Durnie (nee Battram)
January 22, 1935 – Three Hills, Alberta
September 24, 2022 – Calgary, Alberta
Barbara Joanne Durnie (nee Battram) of Calgary, Alberta passed away in the early morning of Saturday, September 24, 2022, with family at her side.
Barbara was born in Three Hills, AB on January 22, 1935, to Spencer and Gertrude Battram. Barb spent her young years in Castor and Drumheller where she met the love of her life David Durnie. Dave and Barb shared many adventures together always with good friends and family. They were married May 18, 1957, and shared 75 years together, married for 64 years. Barb graduated from Calgary General Hospital Nursing program in 1956, she worked as a nurse before her three boys were born, raised the boys and returned to nursing before retiring. She remained an active member with the CGH Nursing Alumni as this group was dear to her heart. Together, Dave and Barb shared many adventures with good friends and family. Golfing, camping, bowling, and summers spent at Mara Lake with their boys’ water skiing. She was an active member with the Triwood Community Association and Wildrose Church. Barb was an excellent baker, her tray of treats were always welcome. She loved hearing a good joke and telling some of her own. Her small-town charm is what made her so endearing to many.
Barb leaves to mourn her three sons, Doug (Cindie), Greg (Jane) and Al (Carol); grandchildren, Thomas (Ashley), Mike (Kelsey), Alyssa (Pierre) Dan, Pete, and Beth (Anton); and three great-grandchildren, Noah, Vada and Mave. Barb is also survived by her sister, Lois and sisters-in-law, Doreen and Maxine. She is predeceased by her husband, Dave, and brother, Art.
There will be a private family graveside service. A Gathering will be held to remember both Barb and Dave at the Triwood Community Centre (2244 Chicoutimi Dr. N.W, Calgary, AB) on Friday, October 7, 2022 at 1:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. Condolences, memories, and photos can also be shared and viewed at www.McInnisandHolloway.com.
