Obituary of Betty Lynn Pennington

June 5, 1945 - Prince Albert, Saskatchewan
October 13, 2022 - Calgary, Alberta

Betty Lynn Pennington of Calgary, Alberta, passed away on Thursday, October 13, 2022, at the age of 77 years.

Funeral Service will be held at Scarboro United Church (134 Scarboro Avenue S.W., Calgary, AB) on Friday, October 28, 2022, at 2:00 p.m. with Reverend Clinton Mooney, and Reverend Erin Klassen officiating.

Betty Lynn was born in Prince Albert, SK, to George Alexander and Martha Emma Hudson on June 5, 1945. She lived in and called Conquest, Saskatchewan her hometown and friends and relations still live in the community. In her early years, she graduated from business school, worked at Optical Prescription in the Calgary core and later in her life was proud to work as the Office Manager for the Best of Bridge Publishing Company and in the office of Ann McCaig.

People and relationships were the most important aspects of life to Betty Lynn, she was a devoted Mother and Grandmother. She nurtured strong connections throughout her life as a valued friend, trusted advisor and empathetic listener.

Betty Lynn strongly believed in giving back to her community and lived her life that way. She was a Calgary Junior League member, volunteered with Palliser Pumphill Community Association, and volunteered with her girl's sporting organizations, and schools. Betty Lynn continued sharing her time with her Grandchildren and their peers, volunteering in the Louis Riel School Grandparent program helping countless kids in their early years learn to read and write, and then later assisting the Junior Highschool kids with anything but math she’d say! Betty Lynn was a member of the United Church, and as a girl cleaned the Conquest United Church ― the only issue recounted was that sometimes swooping birds prevented her from leaving the building. At St. Andrews United Church in Calgary, Betty Lynn led a group of Canadian Girls in Training (CGIT) and worked to support many other initiatives during those years including the Inn from the Cold Program, all while enjoying the fellowship of the congregation.

Betty Lynn loved laughter and adventure. She enjoyed countless road trips from Conquest, back and forth from Saskatoon, to and from Calgary, up to the Penhold Pennington Farm and camping in the family tent trailer. Betty Lynn loved to celebrate people, cooking for friends and loved ones, accompanied by song and poetry. Betty Lynn was a talented poet, she’d written commemorative speeches for friends and acquaintances, countless place cards, and invitations. People appreciated her talent for taking beautiful care and attention to artfully create messages on a page, and numerous creations are still cherished memories for many families.

Betty Lynn is survived by her three daughters, Janet, Kathryn and Jamie Pennington; son-in-law, Aaron Purvis; granddaughter, Ray Lynn Purvis; and grandsons, Nigel and Davis Zoller and their Dad, Cory Zoller. She is preceded in death by her parents, George and Emma, and beloved brother, Darwin Hudson.

“What we once enjoyed and deeply loved we can never lose, For all that we love deeply becomes a part of us.” ― Helen Keller
