Obituary of Gordon (Gord) Thomas Sawyer

November 24, 1953 - Calgary, Alberta

October 13, 2022 - Wetaskiwin, Alberta

With great sadness we announce the passing of our beloved father, brother, grandfather, husband and friend, Gordon Thomas Sawyer at the age of 68 years.

He was a major sports fan, avid outdoorsman and golfing was his passion. His zest for life, great sense of humour, amazing stories and huge heart led to making countless friends.

Gord was born in Calgary on November 24, 1953. He spent his formative years there and in Red Deer where he developed a lifelong brotherhood with many, especially Bob Mullen and Neale Denman. Their fishing trips and golf adventures were legendary.

Gord enjoyed a very successful career in advertising at the Calgary Sun that spanned decades. He also accomplished his dream of working in professional sports as President of the Edmonton Rush. His last five years in Wetaskiwin were spent with a new band of brothers at the Montgomery Glen Golf Course.

Gord will be lovingly remembered by his wife Loida; daughters, Chelsea Sawyer, Kate Sawyer (Santino Dimarzo) and Kit Yvonne Balanag; sisters, Susan Herbert (David-deceased) and Beth Sawyer (Kris Pretty). Gord will also be greatly missed by his grandchildren: Quincy, Lainy, Georgia, Rocco and Kryz, as well as many nieces, nephews, and countless friends.

Family and Friends are invited to a Celebration of Gord’s Life at Rutland Community Hall on Sunday, October 23, 2022 from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. Condolences, memories, and photos can also be shared and viewed here.

In living memory of Gordon Sawyer, a tree will be planted in the Ann & Sandy Cross Conservation Area by McInnis & Holloway Funeral Homes, Park Memorial, 5008 Elbow Drive SW, Calgary, AB T2S 2L5, Telephone: 403-243-8200.
