Obituary of Lina Coppola (nee Buccini)

March 24, 1923 - Villalago, L'Aquila, Italy
October 17, 2022 - Calgary, Alberta

Lina Coppola passed away peacefully on Monday Oct 17, 2022 at the age of 99 years.

Lina was born in Villalago, L’Aquila, Italy to Giovanni and Imelda (Caranfa) Buccini on March 24, 1923. In 1946 she married Severino in Villalago. In 1953 she immigrated to Canada with her two young daughters, Maria and Amalia, to join her Severino to start a new life for their family. In 1955, a son, Giovanni, arrived to expand the family. Lina and Severino worked hard all their lives providing for their family always with the goal of creating a strong, happy and connected family. Lina worked as a seamstress in various local stores as well as providing these services to family, friends and others at home. In 1989 Lina lost her beloved Severino but carried on despite this challenge. She went on to volunteer for 20 years at the Beverly Centre in Calgary while continuing with family traditions and setting a good example of caring for others and of the importance of family to her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Lina’s pride and joy was her family. She loved to cook that special, delicious, impossible to replicate Nonna food for everyone. She had amazing sewing skills and no one could alter a piece of clothing like she did.

Lina was a loving sorella, Mamma, Zia, Nonna and Bisnonna, and was loved by all.

Lina is survived by her siblings, Leonina, Graziano, and Silvana; as well as nieces and nephews in Villalago and other parts of the world. She is also survived by her loving children, Maria (Denis) Trottier, Amalia (Robert) Veldhoen, and Giovanni (Vera) Coppola; grandchildren, Natalie Veldhoen (Patrick Hospes), Nadia (Matthew) Hogan, Linda (Joel) Gartner and Geoffrey (Patrizia) Coppola; great-grandchildren, Kiara, Maggie, Lilliann, Jacob, Josie, Kassandra, Katherine, Elizabeth, Anthony, Elliott and Erica.

The family would like to sincerely thank all the staff at Swan Evergreen Village who provided such compassionate care to Mom over the last five and a half years. The dedication and care given to “Mamma Lina” is so appreciated.

Relatives and friends are invited to Tributes Wednesday, October 26, 2022 at 10:30 a.m. followed by Funeral Mass at 11:00 a.m. at Holy Spirit Catholic Church (10827 – 24th Street S.W., Calgary, AB). Reception to follow in the church hall.
