Kay is survived by her daughter Florence (Bing) and son Albert (Lynn); daughters-in-law Diane (Larry), and Joan (George); grandchildren, Michael (Tamara), Kevin (Christel), and Jennifer; and great-grandchildren, Ava, Spencer, Aubrey, Oliver, Arden, and Finn; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Kay was predeceased by her loving husband Ray, and her sons, Larry, and George.

Kay was born in Hoi Ping, Guangdong province, China, on May 7, 1927. She married Ray on August 12, 1947 and they spent 25 loving years together. After a short stint in Hong Kong, Kay moved to Moose Jaw in 1958. She worked as a seamstress at CanaDays Apparel and proudly earned her 25-year pin. She was a member of the Moose Jaw Chinese Cultural Association and of its performing Chinese Dance troupe. Kay accomplished much during her life and was particularly proud of properly raising her family, especially during hard times. She was renowned for her great cooking, her baking, and her gardening. Each year she boasted the harvest of the largest melons and squash in the Chinese community, which she generously gave away to family and friends.

Life wasn’t always fair or easy for Kay. She survived numerous Japanese invasions of her village throughout the Sino-Japanese war and WWII. She was separated from her husband for a few years with two infants, not knowing when the family would be together again, while he went to Canada to establish a new life for them there. She came to Canada with mixed emotions, excited about her new life and having her family together, yet facing the challenges of adapting to a new language, culture, and country. The hardest blow was becoming a widow at the young age of 45. Over the years, she has endured hardship with courage, resilience, and fortitude, all to be admired.

She enjoyed an active life in Moose Jaw for 53 years. Kay was well-liked and respected in the community where her friendliness and kindness won everyone over. There, she raised her four children, watched them graduate, and was proud of their successful lives. Kay moved to Calgary in 2011 to join her family that had not been living in the same city together since 1972, and where she could be with all her children everyday as she wished.

She will be remembered for her generosity and kindness to everyone around her.

In living memory of Kay Yuk Ha Chow, a tree will be planted in the Ann & Sandy Cross Conservation Area by McInnis & Holloway Funeral Homes, Chapel of the Bells, 2720 Centre Street North, Calgary, AB T2E 2V6, Telephone: 403-243-8200.
