Obituary of David Robert Wood

September 25, 1935 – Drumheller, Alberta

October 25, 2022 – Calgary, Alberta

 

David Robert Wood, son of David William Shervill and Anne Rebecca Jane Wood (nee Carmichael) and beloved husband of Beryl Rose Wood (nee Jackson) of Calgary, passed away on Tuesday, October 25, 2022 at the age of 87 years. In a room full of love, David Wood passed away peacefully.

 

David spent his childhood in small-town Central Alberta including, Byemoor, Delia, Stettler, Jasper Place, and Edmonton, where David became a big brother when his baby sister Maryanne Daisy was born.

 

In 1947 the family was in a head-on collision which was life-changing. At age twelve, David did not return to school for six months so he could run the family store, Anne’s Confectionary. This work ethic stayed with David throughout his life. After returning to school, he graduated with honours and completed an Electrical Engineering degree from the University of Alberta. He was recruited by Calgary Power. His engineering career took him to Sun Oil, Energy Resources Conservation Board, and teaching at SAIT.

 

His grandmother Daisy Wood taught him to play the piano. At age fifteen he began playing the organ at St. Paul’s United Church, Edmonton. For over 50 years, he would continue to play the piano accompanying many community concerts and operettas and playing the organ at Calgary churches, St. Michael’s and All Angels Anglican Church, and St. Matthews United, to name a few.

 

He met Beryl, a Sunday school teacher with a charming British accent. They fell deeply in love, were married shortly after, and started a family.

 

David gave much loving support to his family, his community, and the church, including supporting his wife Beryl in founding the Observation Nursery School of Calgary, also contributing as a board member at the Canadian Mental Health Association, Family Life Education, and Sorrento Centre for Human Development.

 

David was a lifelong learner who loved books. He lived his life with integrity, compassion, and a great love of music. He taught us wonderful lessons of life for which we will all be forever grateful.

 

David is survived by his children, Gareth Wood (Cheryl), Paula Mary, Leah Lacroix (Marcel), Dewi Wood (Serena nee Staples), and son-in-law Pierre Binette; his grandchildren, Gabriel Binette (Tracy Nguyen), Paul Binette, Caitlin Wood, Zachary Lacroix, and Dylan Lacroix; great-grandson Vincent Gabriel Truc Binette, and extended family, Raymonda Waterchief, her children, Treena and Rufus Pretty Youngman Jr.

 

David is also survived by his sister Maryanne Kuzio and her children, Kenten Kuzio (children Jonathan and Natasha), Kerri Paine (Cranston Paine, children Jordan and Atticus), Sherri Kuzio (Telly Tzounakos), as well as numerous cousins, and friends. 

 

David was predeceased by the love of his life, his wife of over 60 years, his wife Beryl Rose Wood, his daughter Roseanne Beryl Binette, and his parents, David “Shirvill” and Anne Wood.

 

David Wood’s Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held at St. Stephen’s Anglican Church (1121 14 Ave SW, Calgary, AB), on Monday, November 7, 2022, at 1:00 p.m.

 

Immediately following the ceremony the Wood Family invites all guests to join them for coffee and hugs in the back of the sanctuary. A Private Family Graveside Service will follow on a later date at Queen’s Park Cemetery.
