Obituary of Frank Potter

March 10, 1944 – Sidney, British Columbia
October 28, 2022 - Calgary, Alberta

Frank Potter of Calgary, AB, passed away on Friday, October 28, 2022 at the age of 78 years.

Francis was born on March 10, 1944, in Sidney, BC to Elizabeth Mary Catherine Poets (born 1912 in Lommell, Belgium) and Charles Edmund Potter (born 1900 in London, England). After Charles’ passing, Elizabeth wed Leon Antonie Louis Kenler (born 1912 in Belgarde, Saskatchewan) who proudly raised Frank as his own.

Frank was raised across Canada as an “army brat”, as Leon was a career soldier. Many of his formative teenage years were spent in Brandon, Manitoba where he developed many lifelong friendships. He moved to Calgary, AB in September 1973 in search of better opportunities. Francis married Janice Armit in 1963 and Lynn Brown in 1978. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, and coached youth soccer and bowling for a number of years. He was also active with CUPE local 38 until his retirement, where he fought for better compensation and working conditions as a union executive member.

Francis held a passion for sports, and all things Canadian Football. He would regularly attend Calgary Flames and Calgary Stampeders games, where he was a fixture in the tailgating community with his dear friends Bobby, Neil, Armin and Keith. Frank was also an avid golfer, playing courses across the country. Christopher and Patrick have fond memories of being taught how to golf at Richmond Green and Valley Ridge.

He will be most remembered for his humor, big laugh, vocal desire for fairness, and stubbornness. Frank was an animal lover, and especially fond of dogs. He would often share stories of his grandparents’ dog Suzie, he was the best friend of Snoopy, and was often the go-to cat-sitter of Lebowski, Christopher’s first cat.

Francis is survived by his three sons, Grant (Ottawa), Patrick (Vancouver) and Christopher (Calgary). Francis is also survived by his brother Bill (Winnipeg) and sister Susan (Calgary). Francis is predeceased by his brothers Barry and Charles, who both proudly served with the Canadian Forces.
