Obituary of Madeleine Louise Schwope

December 7, 1937 - Vancouver, British Columbia

November 1, 2022 - Calgary, Alberta

Madeleine Schwope (nee Peters) of Calgary, AB, passed away on Tuesday, November 1, 2022 at the age of 84 years, after a long and brave battle with dementia. Even during the end stages of dementia her positivity, sense of humour and love of music shone through.

Madeleine was born in Vancouver, BC on December 7, 1937. She moved to Calgary, AB, where she lived for the rest of her life. Even though she didn't return to Vancouver she never lost her love for the city of her birth.

She volunteered with charities that promoted mental health, made lunches for the homeless and volunteered taking care of children at various school daycares in Calgary.

Madeleine accomplished much through her life and was particularly proud of her ballet dancing/instructing, dental hygienist work, volunteering/advocating for mental health and daycare volunteering.

She enjoyed ballet, the performing arts, and the music of Frank Sinatra. Some of her favourite Frank Sinatra songs were, “My Way”, “Moon River”, and “Send in the Clowns”. Madeleine’s favourite ballets were The Nutcracker and Swan Lake and one of her favourite movies was “It’s a Wonderful Life”. Madeleine also enjoyed dancing and participating in community socializing groups. She enjoyed travelling and some of her most memorable vacations were when she went with friends to Hawaii and California and her son to Montreal and Quebec City. Her favourite foods were sweet and sour spareribs and Nanaimo bars. She also enjoyed slowly sipping black decaf coffee.

She will be most remembered for her kindness, willingness to listen, and her support for people during their times of crisis.

Madeleine is survived by her son Warren Schwope of Calgary, AB, and several longtime friends.
