November 17, 2022 – Calgary, Alberta

Betty Oliphant of Calgary, AB, passed away peacefully on Thursday, November 17, 2022, at the age of 93 years.

Betty was born in Medicine Hat, AB, on April 23, 1929, and graduated from the Holy Cross School of Nursing in 1951. She married the love of her life, Thomas Oliphant in 1953. Betty was one of the early pioneers of women who had a career while raising a family. Betty worked in hospital settings and in a family practice clinic where she retired in 2009, at the age of 75 years.  She was a member of the Catholic Women’s League, and the Holy Cross Alumni. Betty crocheted blankets for the Alberta Children’s Hospital and spent many years on the Pastoral Visitation Team at Corpus Christi Catholic Church. Betty enjoyed traveling, entertaining, crocheting, sewing, and was an avid reader.

Betty's passion was to bring family and friends together, hosting beautiful meals, regardless of the numbers, leaving many with treasured memories. Betty was extremely proud of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Her happiest moments were shared with family and friends. As our family matriarch, Betty was a source of wisdom, and a caring and compassionate lifestyle model, instilling strong family values and leading the way on how to remain independent, youthful, and vibrant in life. Betty will be most remembered for her smile, the twinkle in her eyes, her kind and caring nature not to mention her prolific homemade pies and baking.

Betty is survived by her daughters Donna (Doug) Louch of Vernon BC and Bev (Jim) Berg of Calgary AB, grandchildren, Tanice (Rich), Kenzie, Kelly (Kevin), Bonnie, Carmen (Scott), Andrea, Alycia (Matt), and Cory (Lailyne); and great-grandsons Aston, and Hunter.

Betty is also survived by her brother Elvin (Colleen) Dorscher, sister Doreen Michalsky, and sister-in-law Diane Dorscher; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Betty was predeceased by her loving husband Thomas Oliphant, son David and his wife Janet Oliphant, parents Josephine and Valentine Dorscher, brothers George Dorscher and Joe Dorscher, and Ken and his wife Sharron Dorscher, sister Anna and her husband Bob Sneddon and her brother-in-law Ralph Michalsky.

The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Corpus Christi Catholic Church (Corner of 4th Street & Northmount Drive N.W., Calgary, AB) on Friday, November 25, 2022, at 1:00 p.m. Graveside Service to follow at Queen's Park Cemetery.
