Obituary of Doris Leone Whittingham

July 12, 1929 - Astle, New Brunswick

November 21, 2022 - Calgary, Alberta

Doris Whittingham, beloved wife of Thomas Whittingham of Calgary, AB, passed away on Monday, November 21, 2022, at the age of 93 years, surrounded by her family.

Doris grew up in Astle, NB and in 1949, she met her husband Thomas at the University of New Brunswick. At the time, Doris was the Secretary to the Provincial Geologist and Thomas was attending the University of New Brunswick where he was enrolled in Geology and working the summers for the Inspector of Mines, who's office was right next door. They married in June 1951.

She enjoyed many friends in her lifetime, particularly the wonderful people at her church (St. Matthew's United). Many supported her pastoral care when she established the Prayer Shawl Ministry at St. Matthew's which created beautiful shawls for the Children's Hospital and the community at large. She also volunteered for Meals on Wheels and the Tom Baker Hospital.

In later years, visiting friends in care facilities became a priority. Since 1986, Doris has been a foster mother to many children through World Vision, receiving many letters and report cards from each and every child. It is her wish that this effort be carried on in her name. Besides her loving husband of 71 years, Thomas, Doris is survived by her children, Stephen (Lynn), Debra, and Marc (Rhonda); grandchildren, Matthew (Morgan), Alana (Jeff), Brett (Joleen), Megan (Aaron) and Riley all of Calgary, AB, and Laura (Zach) of Vancouver, BC; and great-grandchildren, Jake, Eddie, Chelsea, and Mason all of Calgary, AB; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Doris was predeceased by her parents, nine siblings and her son-in-law, Dale.

A Celebration of Doris’ Life will be held at McInnis & Holloway (Park Memorial, 5008 Elbow Drive SW, Calgary, AB) on Saturday, December 3, 2022, at 2:00 p.m. Reception to follow in the Hospitality Centre at the Funeral Home. Family and friends who are unable to attend in person are invited to join Doris’ service streamed live (see below) on the day of the service.
