Obituary of Walter Brian BLAHEY

October 17, 1949 – Yorkton, Saskatchewan September 14, 2019 – Calgary, Alberta Some knew Walter as a brilliant and highly respected doctor of haematology and oncology. Some knew Walter as the physician who saved their life or the life of someone they love. Some knew Walter as a devoted father and family man, someone to turn to for guidance, for comfort, for a good laugh. Some knew Walter as an outdoorsman, an athlete, a trickster, a man who sought solace in nature. Many knew Walter as a man of few words with a kind compassionate heart. For all of us, September 14, 2019 marks a day of great loss as Walter passed away following a cardiac arrest, with Brenda, his wife of 45 years by his side. Born on October 17, 1949 in Yorkton Saskatchewan to Emily and Walter Murray, Walter Brian, alongside his beloved brother Donald, were raised on the family farm- a farm that Walter loved and would return to many times throughout his life. Here, Walter and Donald, notorious pranksters, were nourished with the Ukrainian food of their ancestors, and instilled with a deep value for education and hard work. Medicine was Walter’s first choice, despite an offer to pursue a potential football career, a sport he cherished throughout his life, instead he followed his passion for medicine, never looking back. It is in the halls of the hospitals where Walter met his soon to be wife, a bold and brilliant nurse, Brenda. In 1973, Walter graduated with distinction from the College of Medicine at the University of Saskatchewan before completing an internship, together with Brenda, in Flint Michigan. Six years after being married on June 29, 1974 Walter and Brenda welcomed their first daughter Carmen, followed in 1983 by Kaela and Wharran in 1986. Walter devoted his life to medicine and to his family. Later in life Walter and Brenda were fortunate to travel the world. Together we can honour Walter’s life through our expression of the values he embodied. That of compassion, integrity, selflessness, and determination. A Gathering in honour of Dr. Walter Blahey will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY () on Saturday, September 21, 2019 at 11:30 a.m. Reception to follow in the Hospitality Centre at the Funeral Home.
