Obituary of Anthonius Negenman

February 4, 1934 - Avernhorn, The Netherlands

December 16, 2022 - Calgary, Alberta

With deep respect and much love, we announce the passing of Anthonius “Tom” Negenman, beloved husband of Maria “Rita" Negenman (nee Bolder), of Calgary, Alberta, on Friday, December 16, 2022 at the age of 88 years.

Tom was born in Avernhorn, Netherlands on February 4, 1934. He immigrated to Canada from the Netherlands in 1953 with his family and lived in Calgary, AB. Tom married Rita in 1957.

Tom accomplished much through his life and was particularly proud of his family and business. He owned and operated an Esso Service Station on Elbow Dr and 69th Ave in Calgary. This was an important business in the Kingsland community for many years. He later took over an Esso in Huntington Hills before retiring.

Tom had a passion for and enjoyed music his whole life, even fronting a band “The Rhythmairs” in the 1960s. He played piano (by ear), accordion and could whistle any tune. Even well into his 10-year struggle with Alzheimer’s, music was a way to make him smile and sing.

One of Tom’s favourite song verses was from Kenny Rogers, “you gotta know when to hold em, know when to fold em, know when to walk away, know when to run. You gotta count your blessings..."

Tom was also passionate about soccer (a former goalkeeper) and enjoyed watching international soccer, especially cheering for Team Holland (Oranje).

Tom’s most memorable vacations were with his family, including many summers at BC lakes, numerous trips to Maui, and RVing through the US. He loved motorboats and water skiing, especially pulling any child that wanted to try.

He will be most remembered for his big smile, friendliness to all he met, and always looking on the bright side of life.

Besides his loving wife, Tom is survived by his two daughters, Margaret Negenman and Yvonne Carter (Kenny); and three sons, Tom Jr Negenman (Lynn), Bob Negenman and Paul Negenman (Jill). He was Opa to twelve grandchildren, Jacob Rice (Melissa), Connor Huck, Cleo Huck, Marti Alvord Henry, Lana Booth (Nolan), Ty Carter, Brendon Negenman (Baharak), Justin Negenman (Megan), Desirea Kolozetti (Dean), Jeffrey Negenman, Joel Negenman, Michael Negenman; and six great-grandchildren, Keegan, Beckham, Jonah, Onyx, Kai, and Roman. Tom is also survived by his  one brother Bill Negenman (Terri); and two sisters, Alice Stensland (Russ) and Johanna Christie (Dave); as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

He leaves us to join those who have gone before him: his mother and father, Marie and Wypke Negenman; his oldest sister, Mary Klaver; and his two brothers, Kees Negenman and Joe Negenman.

A Funeral Mass and gathering will be held at Corpus Christi Catholic Church, 404 Northmount Pl NW, Calgary, on Tuesday, December 27, 2022 at 1:00 p.m. Condolences, memories and photos can also be shared and viewed here.

In living memory of Tom Negenman, a tree will be planted in the Ann & Sandy Cross Conservation Area by McInnis & Holloway Funeral Homes, Crowfoot, 82 Crowfoot Circle NW, Calgary, AB T3G 2T3, Telephone: 403-241-0044.
