Obituary of Karl Douglas Moore

April 23, 1936 – Vancouver, British Columbia

December 24, 2022 – Calgary, Alberta

Lieut. Colonel Karl Douglas Moore of Calgary, AB, passed away on Saturday, December 24, 2022, at the age of 86 years.

Doug was born in Vancouver, British Columbia, on April 23, 1936, to Karl Faber and Mary Ann Noble Moodie and was the eldest of four children.  He met his wife Lorraine Jones in Calgary where they were soldiers of the Salvation Army Calgary Citadel Corps.  Doug was commissioned as a Salvation Army officer in June 1957, as a member of the Faithful session of cadets.

Doug and Lorraine were married in 1960 and served as officers in various locations and capacities within Canada from 1960 to 2001 when they retired from active duty. During his career, Doug was appointed to several corps, and his divisional roles included Divisional Commander for Alberta and the Northwest Territories and Principal of the Salvation Army’s College for Officer Training in Toronto. Doug’s work was motivated by servant leadership and excellence.

Education was very important and a lifelong pursuit for Doug.  In 1996, he graduated with a Master of Theological Studies (MTS) from Tyndale University. Biblical scholarship was a strong focus in his personal life and ministry. He was a disciplined student of God’s Word and faithfully wrote a daily journal of prayers and reflections. His prayer life, bible study and relationship with God were of utmost importance to him, as reflected in an excerpt from his personal mission statement:

"To wholeheartedly and self-forgetfully love God and follow and serve Jesus Christ by proactively modelling the spirit filled life with love, discipline, obedience, commitment, wisdom, integrity, and good humor so as to intentionally maximize positive impact on the lives of others."

Life was never the same for Doug after Lorraine passed away in 2014, but he took comfort and pride in his children and grandchildren.  He enjoyed every opportunity to spend quality time with them.

He is survived by his daughter, Carolyn (Øyvind) Bjartveit; his son, Graham (Alison) Moore; his grandsons, John and Paul Bjartveit, Jonathan, Matthew (Elise) and David (Julia) Moore; and great-grandson, Ezra Moore. Doug is and will be missed by his family and many friends.
