Maria Cristina Iglesias, beloved wife, mother, and Abuela, passed away December 26, 2022, at the age of 88 years.

Cristina was born in Tegucigalpa, Honduras. Young Cristina had a flair for dressing up, fashion, and photography. She married her childhood best friend Rafael at age 23, and the two worked hard in Honduras and the US to provide for their beautiful daughters, Karla and Cristina. Although she didn’t have a formal education, she was a resourceful and intelligent woman with an immense work ethic. This, and her spirituality which she nurtured through daily prayer, helped her navigate all life’s challenges. At age 62, she and Rafael moved to Canada to be with their grandchildren, after the passing of their daughter Cristina. Abuela loved meeting people and with the help of Rafael’s charm and laugh, despite speaking very little English, they were able to foster a large, loving community here in Calgary.

For Abuela, her family and spending time with them meant the world to her. Any opportunity to spend time with the family, from cooking a meal to a movie night, was time well spent. In her own time, Abuela continued to stay young and active at the age of 88. She found immense joy in music, dancing, watching telenovelas, and caring for her plants; you could always catch her swaying around when we played her favourite songs, Brazil and Secreto De Amor, and appreciating her violets that blossomed even in the depths of winter. She also enjoyed exercising at the YMCA, going on long walks around the neighbourhood with Rafael, and more recently, walking laps around the living room and kitchen by holding onto Karla, Rafael, or her walker.

To the people who knew and loved her, she can always be remembered as someone who put everyone ahead of herself. She was a kind, peaceful, loving, humble, and genuine person. She is survived by her brother Pedro, her husband Rafael, her daughter Karla, and two grandchildren Karla and Manuel; and granddaughter-in-law Tanya.

Cristina nació en Tegucigalpa, Honduras. Ha Cristina siempre le gusto la moda y la fotografía. Se casó con su mejor amigo de la infancia, Rafael, a los 23 años y los dos trabajaron duro en Honduras y los EE. UU. para mantener a sus hermosas hijas, Karla y Cristina. Aunque no tenía una educación formal, era una mujer ingeniosa e inteligente con una inmensa ética de trabajo. Cristina creía en Dios puso toda su fe en El en su vida diaria. Ella le dedicaba tiempo a la oración diaria y esto le ayudo a superar todos los desafíos de la vida. A los 62 años, ella y Rafael se mudaron a Canadá para estar con sus nietos, luego del fallecimiento de su hija Cristina. A Abuela le encantaba conocer gente y con la ayuda del encanto y la risa de Rafael, a pesar de hablar muy poco inglés, pudieron fomentar una gran comunidad amorosa aquí en Calgary.

Su familia y pasar tiempo con ellos ya fuera cocinando sus comidas preferidas y disfrutando de una buena película eran sus pasatiempos preferidos. Abuela siguió manteniéndose joven y activa a la edad de 88 años, ya que encontró una inmensa alegría en la música, el baile, las telenovelas y el cuidado de sus plantas; siempre podías verla bailando cuando escuchábamos sus canciones favoritas Brazil y Secreto De Amor y cuidando de sus violetas que florecían incluso durante el invierno. También le gustaba hacer ejercicio en la YMCA, dar largas caminatas por el vecindario con Rafael y, más recientemente, dar vueltas alrededor de la sala y la cocina con la asistencia de Karla, Rafael o su caminador.

Para las personas que la conocieron y la amaron, siempre podrá ser recordada como alguien que puso a todos por delante de sí misma. Era una persona amable, pacífica, amorosa, humilde y genuina. Le sobreviven su hermano Pedro, su esposo Rafael, su hija Karla, dos nietos Karla y Manuel, y bis-nuera Tanya.
