Obituary of Sonia Marie Petersen

Sonia Marie Petersen (nee Harbaruk), of Cochrane, AB, passed away on Thursday, January 5, 2023 at the age of 84 years.

 

Sonia was born in Rycroft Alberta on August 4, 1938. She loved her childhood on the farm, was clever in school and graduated from Rycroft High School. She then went on to work at the bank in Rycroft Alberta.

 

Sonia married Glen Petersen in 1958. who had passed the day before Sonia and after 65 years of marriage. Sonia loved animals with a special fondness for cats, she enjoyed nature, gardening, flowers, camping, and bingo.

 

She was very passionate about reading. She accomplished much through her life and was particularly proud of being a wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was a homemaker in the true sense of the word.

 

She will be remembered as a remarkable lady for her kindness, compassion, caring nature, and brilliance. Her Smile would light up a room.

 

Sonia is survived by her seven children, Glen Petersen Junior, Laurie Patey (Dave), Jeanne Fladhamer (Morgan), Tracey Olsen (Craig), Grant Petersen (Vanessa), Bradley Petersen (Marlane), and Odette King (Burton); thirteen grandchildren, Amanda, Amy Jo, Catlan, Lee, Gage, Cody, Kirstie, Alex, Nevada, Halen, Alison, Devin, and Gavin; eight great-grandchildren, Emma, Palmer, Riker, Willa, Freya, Brooks, Beck, Arlo; her brother Terry Harburak and sister-in-law Joan Harburak, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

 

Sonia was predeceased by her husband Glen Petersen; her mother Akolina Harbaruk (nee Andruik); father Sam Harbaruk; brother Tom Harbaruk; sisters, Ann Nedohin and Tina Kowaliuk and grandson Curran Olsen.

 

 

A Graveside Service will be held at the Cochrane Cemetery (Cochrane, Range Rd 42, Cochrane, AB), on January 14, 2023 at 1:00 p.m. Condolences, memories, and photos may be shared and viewed here.

PETERSEN, Glen

November 28, 1939 - January 4, 2023

 

It is with great sadness that the family of Glen Bryan Petersen of Cochrane, AB, announces his passing on Wednesday, January 4, 2023 at the age of 83 years. 

 

Glen was born in Stettler Alberta on November 28, 1939. As a young man he loved cars, horses, and music. Glen married Sonia Petersen in 1958, and after 65 years of marriage, she passed the day after him. 

 

Glen worked with the City of Calgary for many years until retirement. He loved being on the water boating, fishing, camping, hunting, repairing antiques and fixing anything and everything. He was very passionate about Music and history.   He accomplished much through his life, he was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He Loved his family deeply and unconditionally.

 

One of his fondest memories was teaching his children how to water ski. He will always be remembered as being knowledgeable, crafty, loving, organized and willful with a soft spot.

 

Glen  is survived by his wife Sonia Petersen, seven children, Glen Petersen Junior, Laurie Patey (Dave), Jeanne Fladhamer (Morgan), Tracey Olsen (Craig), Grant Petersen (Vanessa), Bradley Petersen (Marlane), and Odette King (Burton); thirteen grandchildren, Amanda, Amy Jo, Catlan, Lee, Gage, Cody, Kirstie, Alex, Nevada, Halen, Alison, Devin, and Gavin; eight great-grandchildren, Emma, Palmer, Riker, Willa, Freya, Brooks, Beck, Arlo;  as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

 

Glen was predeceased by his stepmother Jean Leona Stenseth, stepfather Henry Stenseth; sisters, brothers and grandson Curran Olsen.  

 

A graveside will be held at the Cochrane Cemetery (Cochrane, Range Rd 42, Cochrane, AB), on January 14, 2023 at 1:00 p.m.
