Condolences
John and Constance were great neighbors for many years, fond memories of a very loving couple. John tied the perfect knot on a bow tie.
Dear Constance...I always enjoyed your visits to Ben's. I have many fond memories of our, always interesting, talks. Please accept my condolences. Marcia Slaminsky
Conci, I send my kindest thoughts and deepest smile to you in memory of John's and your time here in The Berkshires. I am grieved not to remember the last time Mellie sent you a book at Christmas from my shop. But I am heartened by the picture in my mind's eye of the two of you walking into The Bookstore in Lenox on your yearly return. You made everybody happy!
You two were by far the classiest people I have had the privilege of knowing and serving. You would be shocked to see the town these days, the new nouveau riche lording it over the local hoi poloi, well that's always been the case, but of course it grows worse year by year.
My best to you and your family in this time of loss. I am honored to have spent some time on this planet with John Martin.

I have very fond memories of John Martin as a friend of my parents (and colleague of my father's) throughout my childhood, and later as a professor and mentor when I did my BA in English at UC in the early 1980s. Dr. Martin taught me a lot--in the first year survey as well as in senior courses, most memorably his full-year British Novel course--and offered crucial advice and support when I went on to grad school. His well-informed suggestion to consider applying to the University of California, Davis shaped my entire career, and I'll always be grateful for his help, and the interest that he took in my ambitions. At a more personal level, though, I remember his voice, his laughter, and his sincere warmth in non-academic settings, dinner parties, theatre, tennis at Elbow Park...
Constance, Amy, John, Celia, deep sympathies.

Sending condolences for the loss of John from Anthony Parel and Tara and Kamala. We have so many wonderful memories of time spent with the Martins and John will always be remembered as an exceptional person, kind and funny and always welcoming. Sending love to Constance also - he will be missed.
John was a remarkable man—warm, friendly, witty, intelligent, thoughtful, and we are saddened by his loss. Robert had the good fortune to have him as a teacher and mentor, and for both of us, he was an admired colleague and friend. He will be missed and remembered fondly by many. We send our sincere condolences to Constance and the family.

Dear Constance, Amy, Celia and John,
the news of your Husband's, Father's death caught me by surprise followed by a deep sorrow.
John and Constance were among the very first people we met after arriving in Calgary in 1968 and we numbered them among our few real friends. A friendship lasting from then to now.
Should I say that He was an exceptionally nice man? All who knew him would agree.
Let me share your loss.
Affectionally,
Valeria Lee
Surprised to hear of JSM’s death at 101!
I enjoyed being a student in his English Romantic writers course in 1972-73 at UofC.
He loved the poetry and prose of that era and was very encouraging of his students. And he had the gift of a golden voice. Thank you John.
My deepest sympathy to Constance and family on the passing of John. I have so many wonderful memories of the Martin's and so enjoyed getting to know John when he was Secretary of the Emeriti Association and when he and Constance were my next door neighbors for a short while. I am truly sorry that our paths have not crossed recently. Sincere condolences.
