Obituary of Eric Rees Hayne

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved father and “Papa”, Eric Rees Hayne at the age of 85 after a brief illness.

Left to remember Eric are son Alexander Hayne (Annette Kim) of Vancouver, daughter Christy Hayne (Clark Terriff) of Calgary; his cherished grandchildren Riley Terriff and Natalie Terriff of Calgary, Paul Kim (Jimin Jeon) of Edmonton, John Kim (Minseo Kwon) of Vancouver; and great-grandson Ryan Kim of Edmonton. Eric was predeceased by his loving wife of 60 years, Loreen Adele Hayne who passed away in April 2022.

Growing up, Eric lived in several small towns across Alberta as a result of his father Wally Hayne’s banking career.  Eric would later follow in his father’s footsteps, beginning his own banking career in 1955, completing a Bachelor of Commerce at the University of Alberta (Edmonton) in 1966 where he was very active in student government.

One day early in Eric’s career, the very beautiful and charming Loreen walked into the bank branch where Eric worked.   Drawn to Eric’s charm and gregarious personality, Loreen said “yes” to a first date and as the saying goes, the rest is history.  Eric and Loreen were married in 1961.

In 1966, Eric’s developing career took the Haynes to Toronto with the Royal Bank of Canada where they would remain until 1979.  While in Toronto, Eric developed a passion for sailing that would see the family enjoy many weekends sailing on Lake Ontario.  In 1979, the allure of the West Coast took Eric, Loreen and family to Vancouver where Eric became a senior executive of Vancouver City Savings Credit Union.  Vancouver and area would always be special to Eric and Loreen with them returning there in 2006 to retire.

In 1984 Eric, Loreen and Christy moved to Calgary with Eric joining Northland Bank as a senior executive.  Eric and Loreen would then move to Edmonton in 1986.

Throughout his life, Eric’s commitment to community service was clear.  These contributions include active involvement in organizations such as the Rotary Club, Probus Canada and Junior Achievement, being a member of the board of CKUA (Canada’s longest running public radio station) and as a member of the Assessment Review Boards of Edmonton and British Columbia.

Beyond gardening, sailing and golf, Eric developed his artistic interests and became an accomplished painter and maker of beautiful furniture in retirement.

Eric’s family would like to thank the wonderful healthcare staff on the 4th Floor of AgeCare Walden Heights in Calgary.  There aren’t words to express our gratitude for the compassionate care provided Eric during his 8 months there.

If friends so desire, memorial tributes can be made directly to the Kerby Centre at 1133 7 Avenue SW, Calgary, AB T2P 1B2 or www.unisonalberta.com.  When the opportunity presents itself, please raise a glass of scotch to toast the memory of Eric Rees Hayne.
