Obituary of Clifford "Cliff" Thomas

July 28, 1931 - Ottawa, Ontario

January 29, 2023 - Calgary, Alberta

It is with great sadness that the family of Clifford Gerald Thomas (Cliff) announce his passing on Sunday, January 29, 2023 at the age of 91.

Cliff was born on July 28, 1931 in Ottawa, ON. He was a proud career member of the Canadian Armed Forces and served in the Korean War. He was awarded numerous military honours and was part of the United Nations Peacekeeping Forces.  His military experience served as a foundation for a highly successful civilian career with Cerum Dental Supplies Ltd. where he worked as a Manager until his retirement in 1996.

Cliff enjoyed golfing, ice fishing and cycling.  He cycled around the Glenmore Reservoir well into his 80s and learned to Ski in his 60s.  Cliff especially enjoyed taking trips to Hawaii with his wife, Gladys, and swimming in the breaks on Waikiki Beach. When Gladys was diagnosed with Alzheimers, Cliff committed to caring for her at home for many years.  When Gladys eventually moved to a LTC facility, he selflessly never missed an evening by her side in 8 years.

He loved to spend time with his grandchildren and great-grandsons. Cliff will be most remembered for his sense of humour. The smile on his face and glint in his eye made you know a joke was coming.

Cliff is survived by his wife, Gladys Thomas; his two sons, Gary Thomas and Robert "Bob" Thomas; his two daughters, Helen Maglis and Deborah "Deb" Thomas (Abe); his three grandchildren, Carlene (Darryl), Mandy (Tyson), and Tom; and his five great-grandchildren, Joe, Charlie, Will, Oliver Clifford, and Sam. He is also survived by his three brothers, Terry, Bill, and Stanley and bother-in-law Lyness Jones. He will also be remembered by his companion Cougar. Cliff was predeceased by his eldest son, Daniel “Danny” Clifford Thomas.

A Private Family Service will be held at a later date. Condolences, memories, and photos can also be shared and viewed here.

The family would like to thank everyone for their love and support during this difficult time.

In living memory of Cliff Thomas, a tree will be planted in the Ann & Sandy Cross Conservation Area by McInnis & Holloway Funeral Homes, Park Memorial, 5008 Elbow Drive SW, Calgary, AB T2S 2L5, Telephone: 403-243-8200.
