Obituary of Ivy Watson

December 13, 1938 - Ribstone, Alberta

February 2, 2023 - Calgary, Alberta

Ivy Watson, of Calgary, AB, passed away on Thursday, February 2, 2023, at the age of 84 years.

Ivy was born in Ribstone, AB, on December 13, 1938.  She spent most of her life living in Grande Prairie and graduated from the Grande Prairie Regional College, which she was most proud of.

Ivy faced a lot of challenges in her life. She contracted polio at age 12 and spent three days in an iron lung until the fever broke, followed by months in hospital. She persevered as a single mother and went on to lead a full, productive, and rewarding life. She gifted those around her with joy, and the insight to appreciate what one has, as she never once complained about her own lot in life. She was an inspiration to everyone she met.

She adored every single dog on the planet. One couldn’t pass her without a pet and good chat. The feeling was mutual, as she received many a slobbery dog kiss.

Ivy was an avid listener of music and enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was a devoted mother to her son Shannon Moncrieff (Marla) of Calgary, AB. She was a proud grandmother to her three grandchildren, Lauren (Bryan) MacFarlane, Matthew (Mia) Moncrieff, and Spencer (Lauren) Fortier and great-grandmother to Finnley, Adalind, Reilly MacFarlane, and Harlow Fortier, who all live in the Calgary area.

Ivy was predeceased by her parents, Mary, and George Moncrieff of Ribstone, AB; her five brothers, Bob, Roy, Bill, Roddey, and Gordie; and her two sisters, Dorothy, and Ruby. She is survived by her sister Pearl, of Edmonton.

Ivy will be most remembered for her kind and giving nature, her sense of humor, and the impression she left on everyone she met.

A special thank you to Jerry and Linda Napier. Along with their three children, Linea, John, and Bradley - who became family to Ivy and her son Shannon. We cherish the support, acts of kindness and presence in Ivy’s life. The Napier’s will remain part of our family for a lifetime.
