Obituary of Gary Alexander Colquhoun

November 8, 1957 – Toronto, Ontario

February 6, 2023 - Calgary, Alberta

It is with profound sadness, we announce the passing of Gary Alexander Colquhoun, on Monday, February 6, 2023, at the age of 65 years. Gary fought a lengthy battle with cancer, and through all it’s complications, he never gave in. Gary fought bravely and did so with a smile on his face.

Gary was born in Toronto, ON, on November 8, 1957. He spent his early years growing up in Mississauga, ON. Gary graduated from Applewood Heights secondary school and was extremely intelligent. He moved to Calgary, AB, in 1978, and became a father in 1988. Gary’s daughter Alicia was the apple of his eye, he could never find anything but wonderful stories to tell about Alicia, he was extremely proud of her. Becoming a grandpa to his two beloved granddaughters, Lexi and Hazel, absolutely melted his heart. He loved them so very much he could barely put it into words. Gary lived with Alicia for a short period of time giving the girls the opportunity to really get to know their “Papa”. Those memories will stay with them forever.

Gary had a tremendous passion for Model Making and became a Master, a trait he learned from his father. Gary’s work was meticulous and exquisite, he hand-painted the entire “Battle of Waterloo” miniatures, his greatest achievement in this field. Gary was also an avid collector and his knowledge for history was endless. In more recent years, he became a part of The Alley Kats car club, where he acquired and restored a 76’ Cadillac Eldorado, and a 58’ Chevrolet Impala. Gary made numerous friends in the car world. He enjoyed cruising and attending car shows in Calgary and surrounding areas. Gary loved to make people laugh, his story telling ability, though slightly exaggerated to amplify reaction, had everyone in tears laughing and howling. Gary was truly a magnificent man; his smile will shine on forever in the hearts of family and friends.

Gary leaves behind a loving family who will miss him deeply. Gary is survived by his daughter Alicia Jean Patterson, his two granddaughters, Lexi, and Hazel Patterson; his sister Catherine (Tom) Foxcroft, two nephews, Ryan (Amy) Foxcroft, and Matt (Hannah) Foxcroft; and two great-nieces, Kaileigh, and Isla Foxcroft. Gary also leaves behind many great friendships; his absence will surely leave a void.

Gary was predeceased by his mother Jean Colquhoun, and brother Robert Colquhoun, in 1986; and father Robert Colquhoun, in 2008.
