Obituary of Yarub Hamdy AL-ALOUSI
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the death of Dr. Yarub Hamdi Al-Alousi.
Yarub was born in Alous, Iraq and was an accomplished engineer and academic who completed his Bachelor's degree in Engineering at the University of Technology in Baghdad. He later completed his MSc in Engineering at the University of Birmingham in England and finally his PhD in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Calgary in 1983. After spending some time back in his homeland of Iraq and then Libya where he taught at the University of Technology and Sabratha University respectively, he made a home for himself and his family in Calgary.
He was a man of resilience and pride: he found joy and gratitude in spite of struggle and was proud first and foremost of his three sons and their accomplishments. Yarub always reinforced the importance of family, and was a caring and devoted husband, father and grandfather who, has left a legacy of a close-knit family. He was a friend to many, from those he has known for decade's to newcomers to Canada whom he welcomed with an open heart and helping hands. Those who knew him well will always remember his honesty, his generous spirit, his mischevious smile, his dry and witty sense of humour, and his keen sense of occasion and celebration-usually involving a pint of beer and a toast.
Yarub was the loving husband to Azhar Hatem for 39 years, beloved father to Mohamad, Sarmad and Bassam Al-Alousi, adoring jidoo (grandfather) to Vian, Lina, Zain, Raffi and Kiyan Al-Alousi, and devoted brother to Dr. Wajeeh Al-Alousi and Firyal Al-Alousi.
The family wishes to convey their heartfelt thanks for the wonderful care and support they received from Dr. Gwyn Bebb and Dr. Harold Lau. The family would also like to thank the palliative care team including Dr. Lyle Galloway, Dr. Lindy Murphy, Nurse Rhonda Ross, and the entire staff on Unit 47 (Intensive Palliative Care Unit) at the Foothills Medical Centre. A special thank you goes to the hospice team at Dulcina Hospice and to Dr. Andries Louw for their kindness and much-needed support during a difficult time.
