Obituary of Beryl Olive WOOD

WOOD, Beryl Olive (Sparke) June 28, 1920 - October 4, 2015 Beryl Wood passed away peacefully at the Chinook Hospice on Sunday, October 4, 2015 at the age of 95 years. She grew up in Calgary and attended Connaught, McDougall and C.C.I schools. Beryl married Hugh Wood on September 6, 1939. In the summer of 1940 Hugh enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy and was sent to Esquimalt, BC for training. In September of that year Beryl followed him and they took up residence in Victoria. Their first daughter Joyce was born there in 1941. In May, Hugh was transferred to Cornwallis, NS and again Beryl (and Joyce) followed him there and later to Halifax. Beryl and Joyce returned to Calgary when Hugh went overseas. Hugh was discharged in 1945 and their second daughter Donna arrived in 1946. In 1947 the Wood family moved to their brand new war time house. In 1948 their third daughter Judy was born. Beryl loved being a homemaker, always keeping a spotless home and preparing delicious meals for her family. Beryl was an accomplished bowler, winning several trophies. Her employment included the Exchange Café, Woolworths, Loblaws, Picardy's Bakery, IGA, Birks and a lawyer's office. She will be lovingly remembered by her daughters and sons-in-law, Joyce and Lawrence Head, Donna and Warren Bell and Judy and Peter Robinson. She is also survived by her Grandchildren Bry-anne and Mark Blomer, Jason and Heather Robinson, Sharon and Calvin Godsalve, Denise and Chris Leeper. Great-grandchildren Ashley and Megan Blomer, Chayse, Aryka and Holly Robinson, Justin and Zach Godsalve, Jordan, Carter and Aliyah Leeper; as well as several extended family and friends. Beryl was predeceased by her husband Hugh Wood in 1965, her parents George and Flora Sparke and her sister Iva Rayburn. A Celebration of Life will be held at HERITAGE FUNERAL HOME, 1708 - 16th Avenue N.W. (across from the North Hill Shopping Centre, Calgary) on Friday, October 9, 2015 at 1:00 p.m. Please forward condolences through www.hffs.com.
