Obituary of Alfred Nihcolas BAHAN

BAHAN, Alfred Nicholas December 30, 1925 - Calgary, Alberta January 04, 2015 - Calgary, Alberta Alfred Nicholas "Al" Bahan, beloved husband of Marjorie Bahan of Calgary, passed away peacefully on January 04, 2015 at the age of 89 years. Revered husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. Alfred was born in the hamlet of Albert Park (now part of Calgary) on December 30, 1925. He grew up during the Great Depression, which left an enduring impression on his life. Following graduation from Western Canada High School , he signed up for naval training. World War II ended before deployment, however his naval service earned him the opportunity to attend university. He graduated from the University of British Columbia with a geology major in 1949 and was subsequently employed by a number of oil and gas companies. In 1972 he ventured out on his own as a consulting geologist; conducting well-site work and creating his own prospects. He was a lifetime member of APEGGA. During their retirement, Al and Marjorie enjoyed many world-wide travel adventures, wine tours, golf trips, and cruises; most memorably a river cruise from St Petersburg to Moscow. Al was an enthusiastic sportsman. His passion for golf began at the Inglewood golf course in the early 40's, and continued for 58 years as a member of the Earl Grey Golf Club. He took up skiing in the late 50's and shared his enjoyment in the sport as a ski instructor. He became an original investor in Snow Ridge Ski Resort (now Fortress) which resulted in a life-long love affair with the Kananaskis Valley and over 40 enjoyable years as a cottage owner on the Lower Kananaskis Lake. Al's entrepreneurial spirit, loyalty and hard work that began as a young boy during hard times shaped his personal and professional life. He was a devoted husband, loving father, and grandfather, a playful friend of neighborhood children and a trusted companion at work and play. He lived his life with integrity and will be missed by many. He is survived by Marjorie (nee Brunsden), his wife of 56 years; daughter Lisa; son Mark and daughter-in-law Sabina; grand-children Cameron and Mikaela; brothers Walter and his wife Pearl Bahan of Kamloops, B.C., Michael Bahan of Burnaby, B.C. Al was predeceased by his parents, step-sister and two step-brothers. As requested, there will be a private family service. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to Friends of Kananaskis Country, www.kananaskis.org, or Agape Hospice, www.agapehospice.ca. The family wishes to express our gratitude to the health care professionals who cared for Al.
