Obituary of Wilma "Fay" VERSTEEGH

Fay Versteegh passed away quietly on Sunday, June 13, 2021, at the age of 80 years, while being well cared for at Amica Brittiania in Calgary. Fay was born in Calgary, Alberta on February 6, 1941, and attended Stanley Jones Elementary School and Crescent Heights High School where she graduated in the class of 1960. She went on to attend Mount Royal College the following year, where she earned a Secretarial Diploma. Fay worked most of her life in Calgary, at the Eaton’s Department Store, and then at the Workman’s Compensation Board. She was then offered the opportunity to move to Edmonton, where she worked for several years. As a testament to her compassionate nature, when she felt that her widower father needed her to care for him in Calgary, she decided to return to her home city. Fay was truly a world traveller. She happily visited many places including: Australia, Fiji, Europe, Greece, Holland (where she had the chance to visit relatives), and Oberammergau where she was able to see the Passion Play. She loved to watch sports such as Curling and Hockey on TV and was happy to discuss all the plays and outcomes with anyone – anytime! She will be most remembered for how precise she was in everything she did, particularly her careful reading of the daily newspaper and clipping out articles of interest. Fay was also very talented in sewing, knitting, crocheting, and loved to save recipes. She was a member of the St. Michael and All Angels’ Anglican Church where, as a young adult, she taught Sunday school for many years. St. Michael and All Angels merged with St. Cyprian’s to form the new Anglican Parish of Holy Cross which was providing pastoral care at the time of her death. Fay passionately supported a wide range of charities such as the Holy Cross Anglican Church, Aero-space Museum Association of Calgary, Veteran's Transition Network, STARS Air Ambulance, Alzheimer Society of Calgary, ALS Society of Alberta, Cystic Fibrosis Canada, and Alberta Guide Dog Services. Her very generous financial support for all these excellent organizations truly made a difference in many people’s lives. Fay is survived by one cousin, Elizabeth (Hector) Versteegh Odiyar of Kelowna BC and their children: (who called her Auntie Fay) Ronald (Tiffany, Jadon & Leah) of Auburn Washington, Royce (Michelle & Jesiah) of Salmon Arm BC, Mai-Rhea (Matthew & Mathea) Whitty of Colombo Sri Lanka; second cousin in Holland, Hettie, (Lo), her children Anneke (Luc) Evertine (Richard) Rolf, and her three grandchildren. Fay is predeceased by her parents, Gerrit (George) Versteegh and Jean (Wood) Versteegh, her maternal & paternal grandparents, Uncle Hendrik (Henry) & (Delphi) Versteegh, cousin “baby” Ronald Versteegh, and Uncle Jim Wood.
