Obituary of Annette MacKenzie

Annette MacKenzie beloved wife of, Duncan MacKenzie of Calgary, Alberta, passed away on Saturday, September 4, 2021, at the age of 85 years. Annette was born in a two-room farmhouse near St. Gregor, Saskatchewan on February 14, 1936. She attended Arras School until grade 9 and then completed high school at the Ursuline Academy in Bruno, Saskatchewan. Annette graduated from the Saskatoon Teachers’ College in 1954 and taught for several years locally before accepting a teaching position with the Canadian Air Force in Zweibrucken and Iserlohn, Germany from 1959 to 1961. During this time, she traveled extensively in Europe and also visited the Holy Land. She continued teaching upon her return to Canada. She met Duncan MacKenzie in Regina, Saskatchewan and they were married in December 1963. Following the wedding, Duncan and Annette moved to Esterhazy, Saskatchewan, where Duncan joined his father’s law practice, and they started a family. Annette continued teaching as a substitute teacher and also started a nursery school in the basement of their home. She would later take on the role of bookkeeper at the law practice. She and Duncan moved to Calgary, Alberta in 2006 to be closer to their children and grandchildren and to help with after-school childcare. She was also active in the larger community helping to establish an inter-faith food hamper program and participating in many community groups such as the Kinette Club, the Esterhazy Drama Club, St. Anthony’s Hospital Auxiliary, and the Chamber of Commerce. In 1991, she was named the Citizen of the Year for the town of Esterhazy. Annette accomplished much during her life, but her biggest source of pride was her family.
