Thomas Johnston

Obituary of Thomas Richard Johnston

 May 22, 1937- February 24, 2023

Thomas Johnston passed away peacefully on Friday, February 24, 2023 in Calgary in his 86th year.

Tom was born in Vancouver. Music and time spent on the ocean both brought him great joy throughout his life. He attended Kitsilano High School where he was active in theatrical productions and a member of the prize-winning male quartet “The Four Bits”. He graduated in 1959 from UBC with a degree in Chemical Engineering. After beginning his career with Dupont in Ontario, a move to Occidental Petroleum took him to many locations in the USA ending in Dallas, TX.

Upon retirement, Tom and Judy relocated to Brentwood Bay, BC where they enjoyed travelling, curling, concerts, boating with brother Bob, and volunteering on the strata council. His friends and family remember Tom for his wise counsel, kind generosity, integrity, and wry sense of humour. Care for his family was his priority. He will be greatly missed.

He was the beloved husband of Judy, the cherished father of Karen Earl (Clay) and Linda Thomas (Mark), and a special grandfather to Brian, Wendy, and Heather.  Tom is survived by his brother Robert Johnston and brother-in-law David Nye. He is remembered fondly by his nieces Susan, Mary, Robyn and Heather and nephews Joshua and Andrew. He was predeceased by his parents Thomas Laurie and Elizabeth Lamont Johnston.

As he requested, cremation will take place. A family gathering will take place at a later date. Condolences, memories, and photos may be shared and viewed here. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to the charity of the donor’s choice.

In living memory of Tom Johnston, a tree will be planted in the Ann & Sandy Cross Conservation Area by McInnis & Holloway Funeral Homes, Crowfoot, 82 Crowfoot Circle NW, Calgary, AB T3G 2T3, Telephone: 403-241-0044.
