Obituary of Barbara Lea Hayne

HAYNE, Barbara Lea (nee Stewart)

August 11, 1934 - Winnipeg, Manitoba

February 27, 2023 - Calgary, Alberta

Barbara Lea Hayne’s long and colourful life came to a close on February 27, 2023, in Calgary.

Her death followed that of the love of her life, Don Hayne, with whom she shared many adventures for 57 years until his passing in 2015. Our hearts are comforted knowing that their lifelong romance has joyfully re-commenced after their short separation.

Barb was born to Maxwell and Muriel (nee Pike) Stewart on August 11, 1934, in Winnipeg, MB. Over the course of her childhood, she lived in a variety of towns and cities in Ontario. Barb had especially fond memories of attending Brown School in Toronto.

In 1956, Barb took the Florence Nightingale Pledge at the Toronto East General School of Nursing. Barb enjoyed a long nursing career as an RN that spanned over 40 years in Toronto and Calgary.

Barb loved to travel and was happiest when ironing out the details of the next adventure she was taking Don on. Cala San Vicente in Mallorca, Spain held a special place in their hearts.

Throughout her life, Barb strived to live, in her words, “fully alive!”. She often cited the words of her dear friend Sheila Komlodi, “What are you waiting for? A special occasion? Life is the occasion! Live it well!”.

Barb is survived by her two daughters, Sally Kananen (Mike Kananen) of Okotoks, AB, and Nancy Hayne (Gerald Halabura) of Nanaimo, BC; brother Norm Stewart (Terry Stewart) of Brantford, ON, and two sisters, Wendy Wiley (Peter Green) of Victoria, BC, and Mary Stewart of Dajiing Giids, BC. Barb will also be missed by her nieces and nephews, Deborah, John, and Sharon Stewart, Kirsten Holuboch, and Helen and Erik Engelbert.

Barb’s daughters Sally and Nancy would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the dedicated caregivers at AgeCare McKenzie Towne, Calgary, AB, who went above and beyond to ensure their mother lived her final days surrounded by compassion and love.
