Obituary of Nathen Jantzen

August 9, 1975 – Calgary, Alberta

February 23, 2023 – Calgary, Alberta

Nathen Jantzen of Calgary, AB, passed away on Thursday, February 23, 2023, at the age of 47 years.

Nathen was born in Calgary, AB on August 9th, 1975. Nathen graduated from Sir Winston Churchill High School in Calgary, AB. Following high school graduation, he continued to pursue his education as an Information Technology Specialist through hands-on experience.

As technology and computers became more prevalent, Nathen found fulfilling employment in the Information Technology field. He started his career at Petro-Can as a console operator, where his father worked and soon followed in his father’s footsteps. He later joined the Forzani’s group as a support technician. After many years as part of the Forzani Group, Nathen explored opportunities with Graycon, WBM Technologies, SysGen Solutions and eventually found a rewarding position at Weatherford as an Information Technology Specialist.

Nathen was a thoughtful and considerate friend who formed a lifelong bond with Troy Heynsbroek in their very early school years. Troy and Nathen would often go for slushies, and explore the neighborhoods in Calgary, many times they would be joined by Travis and Joey.

Gaming and LAN parties with friends often filled Nathen’s free time in early adulthood. Concerts, live music, and performances were also something Nathen enjoyed attending.

Nathen’s son Nolan was born in 2011 in Calgary, Alberta. Shortly after the birth of Nolan, Nathen’s focus in life was immediately centered around the care and nurturing of Nolan and the unique challenges associated with raising a neurodivergent child experiencing severe autism. Nolan and Nathen went on countless excursions and adventures to playgrounds, grocery stores and indoor activity centers. Nathen doted on Nolan constantly and was delighted when Nolan would communicate emotions and display the development of new skills. Nathen was a tireless caregiver for his son and was devoted to giving Nolan every opportunity in life he could provide.

As an avid collector of Star Wars memorabilia, Nathen joined multiple online communities including ‘Star Wars the Black Series, Collectors Canada’ which eventually led to him becoming a founder of the local Calgary chapter. Nathen appreciated greatly the camaraderie shared with his fellow enthusiasts.

Nathen was a meticulous individual who had a keen eye for details, this talent of observation along with his skill for composition made Nathen an ideal photographer. In his spare time, Nathen could be found on day trips with fellow photographer friends, navigating back roads across southern Alberta, scoping out the perfect light and the ideal scene for his next composition. Several of his stunning images have graced the cover or pages of magazines or have been turned into treasured wall art.

Nathen spoke fondly of his most memorable vacation to Vancouver Island. He loved the beautiful little Airbnb with a view of the Pacific Coast, the adventures whale watching and the various beaches he had the opportunity to explore and photograph.

Amongst his close friends and family, Nathen was notorious for his careful curation of gifts. He found the most unique and thoughtful items that suited the recipients perfectly, and he would wait patiently for the perfect time to present his finds, often eliciting responses of surprise and gratitude.

Along with his loving Son Nolan, and Nolan’s mother Caroline Gan (Steve), Nathen is survived by his father Daye Jantzen, stepmother Valerie; mother Lorea Jantzen, brother Bryun Jantzen (Christine), and sister Christie MacPheat (Curtis).

Nathen is also survived by his nephews, Liam and Morgan Jantzen, Nick Tremblay, and niece Ashley Tremblay. He will be remembered fondly by his beloved friend Rachel Hooker and her children Benny and Anna.

In lieu of flowers and cards, should you desire, the family kindly requests donations to Nolan’s on-going and future medical care, education and needs. Contributions may be directed to his trustees at the following address: estatenjantzen@gmail.com.
