Obituary of John Alexander Brackman

August 30, 1932 – Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan

March 1, 2023 – Calgary, Alberta

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of John “Jack” Brackman on Wednesday, March 1, 2023, at the age of 90. Jack was born on August 30, 1932, in Moose Jaw, SK but was a resident of Calgary since 1965. Prior to moving to Calgary, he lived in Medicine Hat where he met and married the love of his life, Jerry, as well as living in Lethbridge.

Jack was much loved by so many people who were so fortunate to know him over his life. His humour and empathy touched everyone who met him. He will be greatly missed by all. The world has lost one of its best. He was as a fantastic husband, father, and friend.

Jack was much beloved by his family, for whom he loved immensely. He is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, Jerry Brackman; his sons, Kurt (Julie) Brackman of Airdrie, Keith (Linda) Brackman of Calgary, and Cal (Alya) Brackman of Calgary; daughter Cindy Purvis of Calgary; brother Guy (Linda) Riddell of Medicine Hat, sister Glad Rycroft of Whiterock, BC; his grandchildren, Alana (Jon) Lindahl, Tyler (Laura) Purvis, Meagan (John) MacGillivray, Jenna Brackman, Jonathan Brackman, and Amelia Brackman; and his great-grandchildren, Jace Nelson, Brody Lindahl, Bennett Lindahl, Hartlyn Purvis, Timber Purvis, Everly Purvis, and Rori MacGillivray. As well, he was very close to his cousin, Lois Hamilton, who was like a sister to him growing up and throughout his life. He also leaves behind many nieces and nephews.

Jack and Jerry were constant spectators at their children’s and grandchildren’s activities over the years, be it watching hockey, softball, soccer and dance. He was much loved by all of the other parents, always positive and supportive. Jack was an avid golfer and long-time member of Inglewood Golf Course. Golfing with his family brought him the greatest joy on the golf course. The whole family would go on summer vacation every year to Spokane, Wash., to play golf at Indian Canyon Golf Course. We have such fantastic memories of golfing with him.

Jack was a proud member of Alcoholics Anonymous since 1961 and acted as a sponsor for many people over the past 61 years, being an active leader of the Midnapore Branch. He was employed at Venetian Marble for over twenty years. As well, he is a former President of the Acadia Community Association, where he played an instrumental role in the construction of the Acadia Recreation Complex.

A Celebration of Jack’s Life will be held at McInnis & Holloway (Fish Creek, 14441 Bannister Road SE, Calgary, AB) on Friday, April 28, 2023, at 2:00 p.m. Reception to follow in the Hospitality Centre at the Funeral Home.
