Obituary of Robert Edwin Stagg

May 22, 1926 – Red Deer, Alberta

March 13, 2023 – Calgary, Alberta

Robert Stagg, beloved husband of Marjorie Stagg (nee Crothers) passed away on Monday, March 13, 2023, at the age of 96 years.

Bob was born in Red Deer, Alberta on May 22, 1926. He and his family moved to Edmonton when he was a young boy where he spent the majority of his life. Bob graduated from Strathcona High School, attended the University of Alberta, and enjoyed a career in health and safety with Texaco Canada.

In 1951 he married Marjorie, the love of his life and his wife for seventy-one years. “Marj and Bob – The Greats”, began their married life and welcomed three children: Ritchie, Barbara, and Bobby who were their true pride and joy. Bob and his family enjoyed travelling and each summer would embark on camping trips throughout Canada and the United States including a trip to Alaska. In later years, Bob and Marj continued their love of travel that included tours and cruises through Europe, Southeast Asia, and Australia. For many years, they took great pleasure in visiting their favourite winter getaways in Hawaii, the Dominican, Cuba, and Mexico.

Their lake property at Lake Baptiste became a gathering place for the entire Stagg families and created many long-lasting memories. With a tea towel over one shoulder and a rum and coke close by, Bob was happiest cooking the creamiest clam chowder or his famous chili while awaiting family to descend. Bob was a proud Albertan and an even prouder Canadian and the Canadian flag continues to fly at Lake Baptiste.

His last years were spent living close to family in Calgary, first at Evanston Summit and then at Whitehorn Village where the staff’s kindness and compassion was such a comfort in his last days.

Bob is survived by his wife Marj, son Ritchie Stagg (Catherine), daughter Barbara Mitchell (Rob), son Bobby Stagg (Barb Harris), seven grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his granddaughter Carly Stagg, sister Jean, brother Joe, stepbrothers, Hedley, Chestley, and Bill Parsons; and half-sister Catherine Mortinson.

An evening with Bob and Marj was always a special event and would be filled with wonderful music, great food, conversation, and much laughter. Although his body struggled to keep up, Bob continued to entertain everyone with his limitless stories, incredible memory, and amazing wit. He will be remembered as consummate gentleman who above all else, loved his wife and family.
