Mildred Patrick (née Holmes)

Obituary of Mildred Clarisse Patrick (née Holmes)

September 12, 1923 - Calgary, Alberta

March 14, 2023 - Calgary, Alberta

Mildred was born in Calgary, AB, on September 12, 1923. The youngest child of Ernest Edward and Louisa Holmes (née Hobbs).

She attended Balmoral, and Crescent Heights Schools before completing a stenography program at what was then Mount Royal College. After graduating Mildred moved to Victoria, BC, with her parents and quickly found a position in the accounts department of BC Electric. She remained there until the reconstituted BC Hydro moved its headquarters to Vancouver, BC—a period of 21 years.

Life in Vancouver, BC was not to Mildred's taste. She returned to Calgary, AB in 1964 and joined the accounts department of Pacific Petroleum. She held that position until 1970 when she married the love of her life - Robert "Bob" William Patrick.

Mildred met Bob in Victoria, BC, shortly after she arrived there but the two lost touch when he moved to Los Angeles, CA, USA, to work. A quarter century later he tracked her down and within weeks the two decided to marry and she moved to be with him in Oklahoma City, OK, USA. They lived in several other locations in the US before returning to Calgary, AB, in 1972 and taking up residence in the newly built Glenmore Towers. This was Mildred’s much-loved home until February 18, 2023 when a fall caused injuries that precipitated her death.

Mildred was predeceased by her husband, her parents, her three considerably older siblings and their spouses: Edward Kenneth Holmes (Elsbeth Hayes), Marjorie (Ernest Taylor) and Dorothy (Albert Long) as well as by her nephew Byron Holmes and her dear friends Joan Carr (née Glendinning) and Alice Poetschke (née Thompson).

“Auntie Mil” is survived by her sister-in-law Audrey Bruce of Victoria, BC, her nieces, Judith (Allan) Hayman in Edmonton and Karen Taylor-Browne (Patrick Browne) in Windermere and by her nephew Ronald Taylor (Pamela) in Victoria, BC, as well as by nine great-nieces and nephews and a growing number of great-great-nieces and nephews who are scattered far and wide. She also has a large number of friends and neighbours who treasured her for her quick wit, feisty spirit and lovely sense of humour. She will be sorely missed by all.

The family is planning a Celebration of Mildred’s Life at a later date. Condolences, memories, and photos may be shared and viewed here.
