Obituary of Margaret Joyce Johnson

March 18, 1930 – Winnipeg, Manitoba

March 22, 2023 – Calgary, Alberta

Margaret Johnson of Calgary, AB, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her family, on Wednesday, March 22, 2023, at the age of 93 years.

She is survived by her loving husband Norman. Marg was forever a devoted wife and lifelong partner for 74 years.

Marg is survived by her children:  Norm, Lesley (Leon), Douglas and Steven (Gail); grandchildren: Shauna (Dean), Trevor (Jody), Michael (Masako),  Joshua (Fumi), Polly Margaret (Stéphane), Marlee (Jason), Adrianne (Matthew), Gavin (Katie), Michelle (Dar), Ryan (Michelle), and Ashley (Chris); great-grandchildren: Carter, Sophie, Nate, Myles, Emmeline, Luka, Lina, Olivia, Émilie, Jaiden, Tristen, Nora, Scott, Edward, Violet, and James. She was predeceased by her grandson Colin. Marg was Amma to her 12 grandchildren and partners and “Long” Amma to her 16 great-grandchildren.

Marg was the daughter of Fred and Agnes Fogg.  She was one of eight children that were raised with a high regard for family values, the love of reading, and the joy of music. Marg was the last Fogg standing, leaving many cherished nieces and nephews in the Fogg family to carry on the Annual Fogg Family gathering. Marg will be fondly remembered by Norm’s sister Dorothy, his brother Keith, and their families.

In 1967, the family moved from Winnipeg to Calgary with Marg and Norm soon enjoying their family farm overlooking the Bow River. They hosted many memorable family dinners often welcoming unexpected guests. Marg somehow was always able to stretch dinners without anyone knowing. The family enjoyed many ski vacations. If you could carry your own skis, then you could go!  …everybody went.

On these adventures, Marg always brought family favourites, that were all carefully prepared and cooked with much love. This always set the stage for buckets of family fun. Yes… it was the cookies.

Marg and Norm enjoyed scrabble and cribbage.  Marg loved playing games with the grandchildren, teaching them rummoli, poker, cribbage, and scrabble to name a few. She was fun, she laughed, and we all loved her.

Marg played golf at the High River Golf and Country Club and was very proud of her two “hole in ones”.

In early retirement, Marg and Norm traveled to near and far off places. Upon moving into the city, Marg enjoyed playing Mahjong with her ladies’ group. She felt extremely lucky to have a great group of neighbours at her home looking over Fish Creek Park. Her mornings consisted of reading the paper, crossword puzzles, and Sudoku, with a cup of coffee followed by searching for a great new recipe to try, even days before her passing.

She ran a warm and welcoming home with great food, charming hospitality, sprinkled with wisdom and humour. She was a very classy lady who will be missed by all who knew her.

Marg often used these words,

“Always be curious and kind, but if you have to choose, always be kind.”

"I go from you gently for it is my time

to take the next step in this journey of mine.

Don't grieve for me long I've not left you alone

for I will be with you in love that we've known.

That love is forever and someday when it's time

you'll join me again on this journey of mine".

A Celebration of Life will be announced by the family at a later date.
