Obituary of Anthony Joseph McMahon

August 28, 1946 - Cavan, Ireland

March 22, 2023 - Calgary, Alberta

Anthony “Tony” Joseph McMahon, born August 28, 1946, in Cavan, Co. Cavan, Ireland, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, March 22, 2023, in Calgary, AB, at the age of 76.

Tony was a beloved husband to Nancy, and a loving father to Darren, Anthony, Shane, and Shelley. He was a proud grandfather to Liam, Declyn, and Patrick; and survived by his older brother John, and sister-in-law Kathleen. He was predeceased by his parents, Anthony (Tony) and Florence (Flori); and his beloved pets, Micky and Urbi.

Tony was a graduate of the Hard Knox in Life and was a member of St. Joseph’s Parish. He was a volunteer with St. Vincent De Paul, Inn from the Cold, and other groups within his parish throughout his many years there. He was employed for over twenty years as maintenance with AHS hospitals (Holy Cross, Col Belcher, Rocky View) and Mackenzie Towne Assisted Living Retirement for ten years before officially retiring.

Tony was passionate about aviation, WWII, and his religious faith. He enjoyed reading books on topics ranging from aviation, WWII, historical and current world events, westerns, and listening to music of Johnny Cash, Gordon Lightfoot, The Eagles, and the Supremes. He achieved his pilot license when living in Montreal and travelled across Canada in various ways over his lifetime. He also attempted the Camino de Santiago trail in Spain after retiring. Tony’s most memorable vacations were those that allowed him to spend time with his family, as well as time to find rest and experience his surroundings.

Tony will be most remembered for his ever-continuous ways to help others in need, his value of loyalty and love towards family and friends and finding ways to pass on and continue the knowledge of his family’s Irish history and culture to his children and grandchildren.

The family would like to thank all of his friends and family who were part of his life, and of those who were there offering love and support to his family as he passed. A special appreciation to those who looked after his care and his family’s needs at the South Health Campus in Room 33 on Unit 66.
