Celebration of Life
Obituary of Edmund (Ed) Shimoon
October 3, 1950 - Baghdad, Iraq
March 27, 2023 - Calgary, Alberta
It is with great sadness that Ed’s family announces his sudden passing on Monday, March 27, 2023 in Calgary at the age of 72 years.
Ed’s journey began in Baghdad, Iraq on October 3, 1950. After leaving Iraq in 1965, Ed, his parents, Michael and Virgine, and siblings, Elizabeth, Christine, Alice, and Carlo, landed in Ottawa, where brother Leonard was later born.
It was in Ottawa where Ed met the love of his life, Deborah Whelan, who, in 1974, Ed made his wife. The two had many adventures together. Moving to Fort McMurray, then Edmonton, and eventually Calgary, where their family currently resides.
Despite all his success in oil and gas, real estate, and construction, Ed’s greatest accomplishment was his family, his wife Deborah and four children: Jaimie, Michael, Kristen, and Kimberley. Family was everything to Ed. His children share that belief, all living within a few blocks of each other, with Ed and Deborah in the center of it all. With eight grandchildren, Taylar, Mason, Chase, Mikey, Sofia, Charlee, Rylie, and Jacob, calling him Baba and another little boy on the way, Ed considered himself as wealthy and fulfilled as anyone could be.
Ed was a humble man of few words, but the words he chose were always strategic and to the point. He believed action and hard work were the secret to success. If you were ever fortunate enough to make it to Ed and Deborah’s lake house in the Shuswap, you would see this first hand with all of Ed’s tinkering projects, gardens, and handy work, all done with the support of his wife.
The simple things in life gave Ed much enjoyment. Ed’s happy place was sitting around a fire pit with his family, sharing stories, and having the occasional beverage. So, the next time you are enjoying a fire, please raise a toast to this exceptional man.
