Obituary of Sheena Mairi Barr Yates

Sheena Yates of Calgary, AB passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 26, 2023, at the age of 81 years.

Sheena was born on May 17, 1941, to Charles and Melville (Barr) Brown, in Ayr, Scotland. She is survived by her husband John; sons, Christopher (Natasha) and Innes; and grandchildren, Ailie, Julius and Maielle.

Sheena came to Canada with her husband John, from her beloved home country of Scotland, in 1966. Sheena had a lifelong love and fascination for the natural world, expressed through her studies in botany and zoology at the University of Glasgow, and her important volunteer work carried out for many years at the Calgary Zoo, as well as the beautiful gardens she created at her home in Calgary. Sheena loved to play bridge with her close group of friends and spent many weekends laughing and enjoying the company of this tight knit group. Throughout her life, Sheena keenly enjoyed these and other pursuits such as cooking, reading, and travelling. She was a devoted wife and mother, who made those around her feel special. She had a uniquely warm personality and giving spirit, with a charm that touched many lives around her.
