Obituary of John Henry Hewett
February 22, 1942 – London, England
March 29, 2023 - Calgary, Alberta
John Hewett of Calgary, AB, passed away on Wednesday, March 29, 2023, of Parkinson’s DLB at the age of 81 years.
Born in London, England, John emigrated to Canada as a young teen, attended Danforth Tech and made many life-long friends in the Kew Beach area of Toronto.
His first job with Gestetner Canada brought him out to Calgary with a successful 9-year sales and service territory. Wanting a more stable career, John joined the Calgary Police Service in 1968, working in many interesting and challenging units for over 30 years, retiring in the rank of Detective / Sergeant. One of many highlights was being chosen for security in Athletes Village during the 1988 Winter Olympics. Not quite ready to retire permanently, John worked for a further 10 years with Alberta Justice in the courts.
An independent, very quiet, good-natured, gentleman of faith, John’s first concern was loving and caring for family. A talented self-taught mechanic, he loved repairing cars for family and friends, but was happiest when tinkering with his Harley, riding with the Blue Knights, or rebuilding his prized M.G., along with enjoying family gatherings in his home and garden.
John is survived by his beloved wife of 57 years Nancy, his son Colin (Sherri), dearly loved grandchildren, Summer, Orianna, and Beau, his sister Betty Peterkin, along with extended family and many cousins in the U.K.
He was pre-deceased by his parents Jean and James Hewett.
A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Cecilia’s Catholic Church (321 – 90th Avenue S.E., Calgary, AB) on Wednesday, April 5, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. Reception to follow at the Parish Hall and Family Graveside Service to follow at St Mary's Cemetery.
