Joan Allen

Obituary of Joan Allen

June 23, 1933 - Coleman, Alberta

April 5, 2023 - Calgary, Alberta

Joan Allen (nee Lloyd) passed away on Wednesday, April 5, 2023, at the age of 89 years.

Mom was born and grew up in Coleman, Alberta, and had many lifelong friends from the Crowsnest Pass. She was a true coalminer’s daughter. At the young age of 17, she moved to the big city of Calgary and enrolled in secretarial school where she excelled in all of her classes.

Mom met dad (Roland) in 1954 at the Avenue Ballroom. It was love at first sight and dad wasn’t going to let her get away; six months later they were married, they had a beautiful marriage and celebrated 65 years together. They had a large family of five children, eleven grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.

Mom was a working mom. She worked full-time most of her life, working a number of different jobs throughout the years. To keep cost down and be with the kids during the day, she worked the night shift for many years at the General Hospital. Over the years she changed positions in the hospital, but eventually landed working in Prosthetics and Orthotics where she ended her career after 30 years.  Her work ethic was next to none, and she rarely missed a day of work.

Mom and dad volunteered hundreds of hours at Thorncliffe Community Centre. We all have great memories of our time there. They were honoured for their commitment and were made lifetime members.

Mom was the kindest soul, and everyone loved that about her.  The staff loved her at her retirement residence, and she loved them.

Mom will be missed dearly by all of her family, extended family, and her group of committed friends, especially her best friend, Lil, with whom she shared a special bond.

We love you mom, we will miss you so much, give dad a hug for us.
