Obituary of Dave Custer

March 31, 1954 – April 10, 2023

It is with great sadness that the family of Dave Custer announces his passing on Monday, April 10, 2023, at the age of 69 years, surrounded by his family.

Dave was raised in Edmonton by his mother, Helen Custer, and his grandparents. In 1970, he met his brother Clint, from Etna, California, and Dave would go on to make numerous visits to Clint and his family over the course of his life.

In the late 1970s, Dave moved from Edmonton to Calgary, where he would subsequently open two bottle depots with his business partner and close friend, Raymond Renaud. Dave went on to serve as the President of the Alberta Bottle Depot Association for two terms, and as a Director of the Beverage Container Management Board from 1997 to 2003.

Dave met Edie in Calgary, and their son Michael was born in 1992, followed by Marc in 1994. Dave retired in 2009, and spent his remaining years travelling, fishing, golfing, and spending quality time with friends and family. He will always be remembered as a generous, loving and caring father, husband, and friend.

Dave is survived by his loving wife Edith (“Edie”) Bérard-Custer, and his two sons, Michael (Megan) Custer and Marc Custer, of Calgary, AB. Dave is also survived by his brother Clint (Patricia) Custer, his aunt Carol (Michel) Maynard, and his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Daniel (Lyne), Hélène (Marcel), François (Johanne), Louise (Glen), and Phillipe (Nathalie). Dave further leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and countless friends. Dave was predeceased by his mother Helen and his grandparents Nancy and Herman Dombroski.

Funeral Services will be held at McInnis & Holloway (Chapel of the Bells, 2720 Centre Street N, Calgary, AB T2E 2V6) on Friday, April 28, 2023, at 2:30 p.m., with a reception to follow in the Hospitality Centre at the Funeral Home.  Family and friends who are unable to attend in person are invited to join Dave’s service streamed live (see below) on the day of the service. Condolences, memories, and photos can also be shared and viewed here. Dave’s ashes will be interred in a private ceremony at a later date.
