Edna McNichol

Obituary of Edna Catherine McNichol

September 26, 1926 - April 10, 2023

Edna Catherine McNichol (nee Burnard) passed into the presence of her Lord and Saviour, on Monday, April 10, 2023, at the age of 96 years.

Edna lived a rich life filled with love and faith. She was blessed growing up in a large family, with three older brothers, an older sister, and a younger brother, living on a farm near Theodore, SK. When Edna was 16, she moved to Yorkton, SK, to complete her high school education. Edna then completed her nurse's training, graduating as a Registered Nurse in 1947. In 1949, she married Oliver McNichol, together they moved to Calgary to start their married life.

Edna and Oliver had four children, raising their family in the community of Scarboro. They helped to establish their home church of Bethany Chapel in 1950, where Edna remained an active member for over 65 years, until failing health kept her away. She and Oliver were an integral part of a thriving faith community with many life-long friends. Edna’s faith in Jesus Christ was deep, strong, and vitally important to her. It framed her days, as she began and ended each day with prayer.

Edna was a loving Mom, spending hours with her family; as an adept hostess, she regularly entertained numerous friends and guests in their home. She had a keen love for cottage life at Sylvan Lake and passed that love on to her children and grandchildren. She excelled at her many endeavours: growing African violets, sewing, needlework, quilting, and knitting; she always had a project on the go.

Edna was predeceased by her husband Oliver in April 2012, after 62 years of marriage. She is survived by her four children, Ross (Janice) McNichol, Marcia (Vic) Rempel, Doug (Jan) McNichol, and Cathie (Grant) Hunter; thirteen grandchildren, twenty-three great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, and her brother Lawrence (Donna) Burnard of Estevan, SK, as well as many nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Service will be held at Bethany Chapel (3333 Richardson Way SW, Calgary, AB) on Tuesday, April 25, 2023, at 2:00 p.m.

Family and friends who are unable to attend in person are invited to join Edna's service streamed live (see below) on the day of the service.  For those who are unable to view live, a recording of the service will be posted.
