Obituary of Eddie Gordillo

February 27, 1936 - Talisayan, Philippines

April 14, 2023 - Calgary, Alberta

 

With deep sadness we announce that Edilberto “Eddie” Almonia Gordillo passed away peacefully surrounded by family on April 14, 2023 at the Foothills Medical Centre at the age of 87. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend to many.

 

Eddie was born on February 27, 1936 in Sta. Ines, Talisayan, Misamis Oriental, Philippines.

 

He graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from the Cebu Institute of Technology in 1959. He worked with the Philippines Highway Department in Camiguin Province in 1960 where he met and married the love of his life Angeles “Angie” Luspo in 1964.

 

Eddie and Angie immigrated with their daughters, Socorro and Divina, to Canada in 1972. They lived in The Pas, MB, for six years, then moved to Windsor, ON, for two years, and finally settled in Calgary, AB, in 1981.

 

Eddie worked at Stanley Associates Engineering before moving to Yellowknife, NT, with the Government of Public Works and Highways, Design and Construction, in 1983 as Project Manager. Eddie was extremely proud to be a member of the Association of Professional Engineers, Geologists, and Geophysicists of both Alberta, and Northwest Territories.

 

He retired in 1998 and enjoyed life to the fullest. Eddie and Angie loved to travel and have been to Israel, Jordan, Egypt, Philippines, Mexico, throughout Canada, and the United States. They loved giving and attending parties, dances, and did volunteer work throughout the various Filipino associations. Eddie was an Officer with the Young Once Senior Association and acted as the Chairman of the Bowling League & Membership. He also belonged to the Alberta 55+ Seniors Bowling, 55+ Senior Association, and the Holy Trinity Church Choir.

 

Eddie’s talents and interests were vast in his 87 years, he participated in chess, scrabble, and bowling tournaments, winning numerous accolades and championships. He also represented both provincial and national bowling tournaments with 55+.  He taught himself how to play the piano, he loved music, and singing, he was a graceful ballroom dancer, and enjoyed basketball, fishing, horse racing, and sports.

 

After his wife Angie passed away in 2005, Eddie remained active in his many interests.  He cherished his long-time friendships and built new ones. He continued his involvement with his weekly seniors bowling league, and travelled to Cuba, Dominican Republic, and Hawaii with one of his best friends, and companion Remi Hipolito. 

 

Eddie is survived by his two devoted daughters and son-in-law, Socorro, Divina, and Anthony; and his granddaughter Sydney, all of Calgary, AB. Eddie is also survived by his brother Sergio “Ricky” and sister Minda; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Eddie was predeceased by his wife Angie of 41 years of marriage, his parents, Sergio Senior and Purificacion; and his brothers and sisters, Benvinido, Rosita, Elsa, Alexander, Norma, Radegunda, and Patricia.

 

Relatives and friends are invited to Prayers and Tributes at McInnis & Holloway (Eastside, 5388 Memorial Drive NE, Calgary, AB) on Friday, April 28, 2023 at 7:00 p.m.

 

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Holy Trinity Catholic Church (1525 – 45th Street SE, Calgary, AB) on Saturday, April 29, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. Graveside Service to follow at Mountain View Cemetery. Reception to follow family at Clique & Sounds Bistro Restaurant (2121 – 36 Street NE, Calgary, AB). Condolences, memories, and photos can also be shared and viewed here.
