Obituary of Emily Irene Newberry

April 25, 2023 – Calgary, Alberta

 

Emily Irene Newberry (nee Hetu), of Calgary, AB, passed away on Tuesday, April 25, 2023, at the age of 88 years.

 

Emily was born in Debdon, SK, on July 28, 1934. Emily accomplished much through her life and was particularly proud of raising and caring for her five children.

 

Emily enjoyed all things outdoors – camping, canoeing, fishing, cross-country skiing, and biking. She also enjoyed sewing, gardening, and cooking. Her most memorable vacation was when she was in Harolds campground in Tappin, BC.

 

She will be most remembered for her amazing strawberry shortcake, her homemade bread and pies, and all her many, many wonderful meals.

 

Emily is survived by her four daughters, one daughter-in-law, and three sons-in-law; Elaine Pippi and Jim Novotny, Lorraine Ethier, Judy Williams and Rick Williams, Cherie Thannhauser and Peter Thannhauser, and Susan Ethier; her twelve grandchildren, Jaqueline Erickson, Ryan Ethier, Suzette Ethier, Tara Ethier, Adam Ethier, Trevor Ethier, Denise Dobush, Brendan Pippi, Matthew Williams, Lindsay Donhauser, Wesley Thannhauser, and Megan Thannhauser; twenty-four great-grandchildren, Brandon Kazakoff, Sarah Kazakoff, Natalie Ethier, Benjamin Ethier, Jake Wakelin, Hunter Wakelin, Daton Anton, Mason Anton, Autumn Pippi, Weston Pippi, Savannah Dobush, Jack Donhauser, Isabella Donhauser, Emiline Williams, Gavin Williams, Juliet Williams, Aime Ethier, Avaya Specken, Miyah Ethier, Henry Ethier, Jayce Ethier, Autumn Ethier, Tristan Blodgett, Brody Blodgett; as well as her great-great-grandchildren, Kane Kazakoff and Logan Kazakoff.

 

Emily is also survived by her sister Marie Sterr and brother-in-law Ted Sterr, and sister-in-law Julie Hetu, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

 

Emily was predeceased by her parents Jeanette and Donat Hetu; her son Henry Ethier, brothers Andrew Hetu, Amie Hetu, Louis Hetu and Leon Hetu; sister Jean Hetu, Mom’s first husband Sylvio Ethier, and partner Gordon Newberry.

 

Funeral Services will be held at McInnis & Holloway (Chapel of the Bells, 2720 Centre Street N, Calgary, AB T2E 2V6) on Sunday, May 14, 2023, at 2:00 p.m. Reception to follow in the Hospitality Centre at the Funeral Home. Condolences, memories, and photos can also be shared and viewed here.
