Obituary of Susie Siew Yin Chung

October 23, 1928 – Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia

April 24, 2023 – Calgary, Alberta

 

Susie Chung (nee Kong) of Calgary, AB, passed away on Monday, April 24, 2023, at the age of 94 years. Susie was born in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia on October 23, 1928.

 

She moved to Brunei with family when she was a young child.

She immigrated to Canada with her family in 1981 residing first in St. Albert, AB, and later in Calgary, AB.

 

When WWII ended, Susie and her sister Doris attended St. Mary’s School in Kuching, Malaysia. After completing secondary school and returning to Brunei, Susie work as a clerk at several offices, and as a schoolteacher.

 

Susie married Fook On Chung in 1957, and settled in Brunei to start her family.

 

She was a member of the St. Andrews Anglican Church in Brunei and was an elementary school teacher at the church-operated St. Andrews school. Susie accomplished much through her life and was particularly proud, and supportive of her family.

 

Susie enjoyed and had a passion for cooking, gardening, and caring for family, and others. Susie enjoyed travel with Fook On on their many yearly trip between Canada, and Malaysia.

 

She will be most remembered for her gentle friendly demeanour, and her caring, compassionate, kind-hearted nature.

 

Besides her loving husband, Susie is survived by her only daughter and son-in-law, Caroline and Derek Lian of Calgary, AB; three sons and one daughter-in-law, Samuel Chung of Calgary, AB, Paul and Sau Peng Chung of Malacca, Malaysia, and Thomas Chung of Tenom, Malaysia; five grandsons, Christopher Chung of Edmonton, AB, Stephen Chung of Calgary, AB, Joseph Lian (Roxanne) of Toronto, ON, David Lian (Tolsin) of Calgary, AB, and Ben Lian of Calgary, AB; one great-grandson, Noah Lian of Toronto, ON.

 

Susie is also survived by her two sisters, Daisy Ingamells of Malvern, England, and Alice Yee of Melbourne, Australia.

Susie was predeceased by her parents Kong En Choi (Chiew Len), brother Jimmy Kong (Rosie), sister Dorothy Doral (Cecil), sister Doris Ong (Kim Kee) and daughter-in-law Rosslyn Chung.
